3D Modeling for Coops (& appliances)

You could raise it, it does make great deep shade, but might want to go high enough to be able to get under there yourself....for injured or broody bird or eggs laid underneath. The 16x16 building my coop is in is raised 18-30" on piers sunk to frost line(I think). I extended the run wall mesh...

Hahahaha... oh how I only wish that were true, that certainly used to be the case, before the 'stupid' phones came along. Sorry. I used to be able to write DOS...but probably couldn't use a stupidphone. With any new software....there's a 'language' aspect......basically what are the commands...

3D Modeling for Coops (& appliances)

Layers are essential in any cadd, and many photo, programs......using them will greatly ease your work(once you get the hang of them). With Inventor, and other parabolics, you can turn on and off all parts in model. Learning curves are painful, often easier to start over than try to...

3D Modeling for Coops (& appliances)

There's definitely a steep learning curve, even if you're a 3D cadd user.

Good idea for cleaning access. One deficit to small coops is being able to grab a bird off the roost if you need to, and most all of us sometimes need to do that.

3D Modeling for Coops (& appliances)

I would skip it, it's not necessary and only adds weight and makes places for rodents and insects to take up housekeeping unseen.

3D Modeling for Coops (& appliances)

Probably, but just checking anyway.....you drew the model with actual lumber size rather than nominal size?

Yaaayyy!! We have a builder!!! Maybe start a build thread Scott? We can link this design thread to your build thread....and back again.

Wow you have a 3d printer!?? ...and can can print to it from sketchup? How cool is that! I commented on your design thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1155688/please-evaluate-my-coop-design

3D Modeling for Coops (& appliances)

Big if....Woods is a great design but ....feed, breed, and age can have a huge difference. Half of my birds are older, 2yo and couple 3yo and the rest are 10mo, several of the pullets are molting. All are EE and Welsummer mix, none of which are prolific layers. What breed and ages are the...

6 eggs a day in what part of the year? Hahahaha!! Sorry, am battling unrealistic customer expectation in this slow part of the year. I have 20 pullets/hens and only got 4 eggs yesterday....but once spring is sprung may get up to 16 a day on average. Eggs are a somewhat seasonal food...with big...

Are the front parts totally separated in an airtight way for winter?

3D Modeling for Coops (& appliances)

I don't think it really matters. The two critical things are: -the width to depth ratio of building, and maybe the height of the front 'window'. -and that all openings are closed tight in the winter except the big front window. Those two things are what keep strong drafts from reaching the...

3D Modeling for Coops (& appliances)

.....and maybe I should clarify.... to me 'publishing' means putting an idea/plan out there anywhere on the net that is incomplete and/or untested. It's something I try to avoid, tho I too am guilty of posting pictorials on my own DIY stuff that was later proven in use to be dysfunctional or...

3D Modeling for Coops (& appliances)

Cool...if you take progress pics as you build Wes could then update the model and make it a publishable plan.

3D Modeling for Coops (& appliances)

This size Woods is theoretical...as far as I know, Howard can confirm or correct me on that. The roof sheathing would be covered by waterproof material(s) would it not, so a sheathing seam should not be an issue? I learned early in my drafting career......'just because you can draw it...

3D Modeling for Coops (& appliances)

Well, you could have notched the 4x4 vertical posts to accept the cross pieces. Roof sheathing doesn't cover edges of wall sheathing, maybe that's just a modeling glitch. Roof overhangs on sides will help protect door tops and leakage (I know that blows your materials layout, but....). 5/8"...
