You may need tp pull the bucket up and let it drain for awhile before trying to feed. I have used the strainer bucket method before but I prefer the laddle/scoop device I found (maybe at the dollar store?). It has holes in it so I just scoop up a scoop full & let it drain and put it in their...
And apparently those little ants that come in the house do not like fermented feed either. I have never seen them crawling on the spoon I use to stir the FF up tho they are on other parts of the counter near the FF.
Once the mud is gone I feed my hens right off the grass. I just dump the food out on the grass and the girls eat it right up. I have never had a problem feeding them this way.
The pro is there are no dishes to clean.
I don't know of any con's
I made a wooden holder for the trough feeder (drywall pan) so that it sits up higher & keeps the food cleaner. I also dont feed in the coop to also alleviate the problem
no specific measurements just long enough so they can all eat without much bickering
I found some heavy duty totes at walmart (black lids/yellow bottoms) that I store my extra grains in. they stack nicely. They have kept the critters out. This year I found stackable ones that have hinged lids that you can access after they are stacked. So far so good on no critters inside them...
They will actually eat less food when it's fermented. Mine get a 1/2 cup fermented feed per bird. At night. And they don't finish it since they spend all day roaming the yard in their electric fence.
Give them a turkey carcass and take a step back. Mine clean one in half an hour. Liver, ground beef, chicken wing bones.......I haven't found a meat they don't like. Very amusing to watch them play keep, away when they grab a piece of meat. I do not ferment meat, veggies or leftovers. Just the...
My chicks which are 2 1/2 weeks old just eat the fermented grains I feed the hens. I was giving them chick feed but their co moms called them to the grains instead. I think the protein level is about 17% for the grains. The chicks are growing wonderfully.
You could also use plastic drywall pans. They have them at any home improvement store. Probably even Walmart. Screw them to a couple pieces of wood to stop them from being turned over. You could cut a piece of wielded wire to fit over top and just turn the ends down. A bungee cord on each end...
Welcome wolf pup. Gloat to see you were able to find some Nustock. For future reference I know some on here make it as well. Bee would have more info on it since I believe she was one of them to try making it :)
