I figured they added some BJG to the BA line to get more size. Without some knowledge the 2 breeds look quite similar. I have NO idea why they would introduce genetics from a feather legged breed.
I have 3 though I'm pretty sure the two 4 year olds from Meyer have some Jersey Giant in them. Black legs, yellow foot bottoms, they are a somewhat "talky". Both are laying this year though one of them had really soft shells last year. They seem OK so far this year but we will see. The 8 year...
Tell that to Meyers ;) The 2 Black Australorps I got from them had yellow feet. The tops and legs turned black but the soles are still yellow. My 2 from Ideal in 2012 have pale soles and slate legs.
I talked to someone at Meyer and they were pretty insistent that they were BAs, not BJGs...
I was going to go with being pecked on as well but if she's doing the damage I'd have to guess something is bothering her.
Did all the BA's come from the same place? The 2 I got from Ideal in 2012 had slate legs, pink feet, per the SOP. The 2 I got from Meyer in 2015 have black legs and yellow...
As far as quarantine together, I would guess that at 3 and 5 weeks they should get along fairly well. But you'll have to do the standard integration with the existing older BAs once the quarantine is complete. I don't think any breed is completely friendly to new birds since they are competition...
My first 2 BAs were night and day vocally. Zorra would (and still does) talk a little to me if I talk to her. Echo was a chatterbox. She'd wander around talking to herself. Hardly ever made chicken like noises. But she bugled, whistled, squealed, even had a 2 note crow. She was also my best...
Good attitude, especially since you can't do anything about it. :) Perhaps as they get older their patterning will suggest their breed mix.
My guess on their age, based on feathering, is about 3 weeks.
I'm sorry too Kurt, hopefully someone will take you up on your flock. Too bad WV is so far, I could almost convince myself it would be worth doing with your fine birds even though I've not bred birds before.
I asked Meyer about it in an email after I got them. The lady that responded said the breeders say "no". I say "sorry, they are a hybrid". Nice enough birds, one is smaller than the other and usually lays in the upper 50's gram range, the other lays in the high 60s, sometimes low 70s. Neither is...
I don't see anything that screams cockerel in either of them. Where did you get them? The BA's I got from Meyer in 2015 clearly have some BJG in their background, yellow legs and foot bottoms as chicks, legs went black but bottom of feet are yellow. No SOP BA will have yellow feet/black legs...
I don't think so. In my first batch of chicks I had 2 BAs. One grew a bit faster than the other which had me :barniethinking one was a cockerel. Nope, Echo was "normal" size for a BA and Zorra can give a smaller Black Jersey Giant hen a run for her money size wise.
