All those pages are filled with people who have a variety of birds, but the Orp is the focus(obviously). Lots of husbandry info as well. I have found them to much more informative than most other venues. Genetics is fun, but a lot for me to soak in as I have no prior experience with it. There...
I suggest anyone who likes Orpingtons to join facebook pages dedicated to them, you all will learn a lot really fast. There are top notch breeders from Britain on them that give fantastic insight on genetics and are very helpful. The thing is, they will be honest, so if you just want people to...
You can add 2 copies of Lavender to anything. Yes, it is technically a lavender if it has 2 copies, but, if you happen to have autosomal red in the mix, or gold base, you will get the leakage, it's a Lavender with leakage. I concentrate on type over color, color is easy. TYPE makes the breed...
I was trying to help someone out at first, then it turned into a slugfest, lol.
I have no ill will towards anyone, especially someone on a computer screen.
Thanks for the post to correct my poor behavior, I needed it. (It's a Blue Orp though!!)
No, not at all. Lavender is Lavender, it's not Blue. Someone looks at my Lavenders and they don't for one second mistake it for a Blue. His comb was damaged pretty good in a fight with another roo. Adding Silver gene into the line is going to fix the gold leakage, next generation, it's clear:)
Gold leakage is very common. I know how to fix it, do you? I chose him because he has superior type. "Type" first, then tweak the color, that's the easy part. Breeding 101.
Lavender is when the bird has two copies of the Lavender gene, blah blah blah.....I know what Lavender is. As I said, I breed them. The Lavender gene DILUTES BLACK to create the greyish color. I am seeing an Andalusian Blue bird, not Lavender, omg...Please, just stop already!!!
I only know...
I happen to have a nice Lavender that has Blue lacing. We are hatching them out now. Here is one that is around 12 weeks old. Light colored beak and legs, and it's lavender. You do have to have some Andalusian Blue in there to achieve the lacing though.
.
There's nothing lavender about that bird, the legs are slate, I imagine the beak is too. The color is Andalusian Blue. That's a Blue Orpington, the lacing is nice though.
We have a Lavender Laced Blue growing out. We plan on taking it back to our Black/Lavender split which has great lacing to darken the lacing on the Lavender offspring.
Black split to Lavender are Black Orps that carry one copy of the Lavender gene. It takes 2 copies to visually see Lavender, a copy from both parents. The only way to know if you have all Black splits is if you hatch from parents that have one pure Lavender parent. If neither parent is pure...
Hold on, I may know someone who has some near you, hatcheries are poor quality when it comes to anything but meat and egg chickens. I'll message her tomorrow if you want.
