    Lavender Orpington project ....

I got my eggs from lavendarorpgirl and like most people hers go back a few generations to the hinkjc line. I need to ask her how closely her lines are related. I'll be breeding on of the roos to my best couple black females in Jan. and my best little cockerel to the two lav pullets in Feb...

So, I would like to know then, where you got your lav orps from? Mine have very slight barring but not over the entire body. I'm selecting against this so have sold the roos that exhibit that trait more boldly. I'll have to look up who I purchased my eggs from. Did I mention that the eyes...

HallFamilyFarm Can you measure one of your hatching baskets? I am trying to get the dimensions (to ensure that they will fit in my bator) and some websites list them but others do not. Thanks!

Thank you HallFamilyFarm! I have punches already and talked to breeders and judges before getting into that. I marked my chicks this year but it was just luck that they hatched on the weekend when I was home all day and I could punch them from the egg markings. This coming year however I want...

Someone please remind me, when working on a new variety: How many people minimum, 5? How many shows and what kind of shows with how many birds? Minimum number of pullets, cockrels, cocks, and hens??? How many years before you can start applying, 5? When do your years start? When the...

    Lavender Orpington project ....

Just wanted to share that I took 3 of my 16 week self blue Orps to our county fair as we usually have an APA judge. She really liked the shape/size of the birds but only liked the more solid colored one with darker eyes enough to make comments on the card. I still received 2 blues and a red on...

    Lavender Orpington project ....

How close to SOP? This is my first batch of Lavs. and I'm impressed with their growth rate. They are only slightly behind my black Orps. of the same age. Along with the off eye color some of them also have very light black stripes, I would call it checking not barring as it is not consistent...

    Lavender Orpington project ....

So, next year when I breed my Lavs to my blacks the splits should have the brown eyes and then that is what I'm hoping for when I breed those back? Correct? Just trying to make sure. I may have already asked or it may have been posted, has anyone seen a difference in eye color, plumage...

    Lavender Orpington project ....

When I was moving and weighing my 12 week old lavs last night I noticed that all of them had green eyes. What color should they be or what color are we aiming for? In the SOP all of the other Orp varieties have dark brown or reddish bay eyes. The lighter varieties have reddish bay eyes...

    Lavender Orpington project ....

HinkJC - please explain the use of a Lav Orp. on white hens? Are you doing this as an experiment for color? Will that mating create splits? If so, what color will they be? Working to improve feather quality? Very curious!

Protein and calcium! But if you are feeding a commercial layer feed you should be fine. If they are really down maybe a game bird feed mixed in with your layer for one or two bags, it contains much higher protein. Remember, scratch is a treat just like candy!

I will probably keep one large good looking one that looks really Orp like. Some are small and some are a good size, keeping up with my BBS Orp chicks! The rest will either go in the freezer or to the local auction as eating cockrels.

    Lavender Orpington project ....

Here are my black and lavandar (self blue) project Orp. chicks. They are four weeks old, unfortunately it looks like most of them may be roosters. Hope they at least look good as they grow. They are in a really ugly stage right now I also have Speckled Sussex and a few other chicks...

Just caught up, it took about 3 weeks but I have read the entire thread! After reading some of the posts I wish others would consider reading before asking the same question that was asked two pages before. While I agree there are no stupid questions the repeat rate is bothersome. Thank you...
