Sumatra had nothing to do with the development of the cubalaya as a breed in Cuba. A few breeders in the US have added it but it was just graded in and later discarded. I tried adding white leg asil and thai gamefowl into my bb reds but after a few generations, the faults came back. So i got...
If you pick up a Cubalaya and then pick up a Sumatra you find the Sumatra is a bag of feathers while cubalayas are quite solid. Cubalayas were made in Cuba from philipino gamefowl, pea combed malays, and bulldog malays. Also possibly European fowl. At first they were called malayas but later...
My daughter raised this stag and i was very impressed with him so i gave her a hen for him. He is only 7 months but already decent sized. Very red comb and looks to be multi spurred. I will either breed him to my black hen or 2 of my white hens this spring. His father is lemon pyle and mother is...
Some cubalayas that i will be raising chicks from this year. Of course i still have the Harris asils, the Saab/Rodgers Brazilians, the GA pluckers, and the Crusher Brazilians. Crossing the 2 Crusher lines, blue and black, and will not keep those familys separate any longer.
there are plenty of sumatras but very few black cubalayas. i agree the cubalaya is more solid while sumatra feels like a bag of feathers. cubalayas are tame and usually not flighty or noisy
Not hatching cubalayas this year. I hatched some Brazilians from Saab and Pasquale lines and some blue crusher Brazilians. 2 asil hens sat on eggs from 2 different cocks and didn't hatch anything. May try the asils again before summer is over. Will hatch plenty of cubalayas next year if the Lord...
i keep them because i love the breed. i dont show. i have tried to breed for production, health, and to the standard. they lay good and we eat quite a few of the extra stags. so yes, i would say they are more than one purpose chickens
