Same here. My dream barn is monitor style with windows in that space that can be adjusted.

Makes perfect sense! Yes, shade cloth on the wall is a great idea! On the top, I find it worse than useless really.

I found shade cloth to be wanting here during the summer. So I use tarps instead. Keeps the area MUCH cooler than shade cloth. If you're on a north slope, pay attention to the wind patterns. Ordinarily the south should be open and the north protected but since you're on a hill you might have a...

ALWAYS a good idea! ETA: I'm aware of Harvey's warning but to this day I still see posts from people thinking to do the same thing, having gotten the idea from him, that seem totally unaware of the warning.

Not all "show birds" are unable to care for themselves. I have some of the most vigorous I've ever had. They hatch when ordinarily I'd think they shouldn't, they live and thrive when I think they've been dealt too hard to blow to survive, and they forage like crazy. In fact I'm hardly feeding...

Sorry, I was talking about Harvey Usarry or however you spell it. No biggie for me either. Just that I don't trust that guy's advice.

A "few" maggots, yeah. No problem. But this guy was advocating putting a huge hunk of already rotten meat out there as a breeding colony for a continuous supply of maggots. At some point, there's going to be just too much bad bacteria in there for the chicken's system to overcome if you do...

His name sticks in my mind because he's the one that was telling folks to let meat rot then have the chickens eat the "Free food" i.e. maggots. Then lost a lot of them to botulism. Seems to me it would have been better to feed them the meat before it rotted and be done with it.

While I largely agree with the main point this author is making, the article does a lot to further a bit of misinformation. Cornish Cross are not "genetically modified" or "genetically engineered." They are hybrids. They have in no way been subjected to Dr. Frankenstien type science projects...

Do you know, the CX requires 4 lines to hatch as well. It's a closely kept secret what breeds are for real in there but all 4 of those lines are not standard bred, they are bred in order to supply the lines needed for the end result, the CX. So that means this new bird is really similar in...

What I've not been able to figure out is why someone would breed "to the standard" and ignore production altogether. OK I do know that for some people winning at a show is everything, but I don't get how that mind really words. Guess I'm too practical. I got some birds of a line of Orps that...

Oh yes, I remember from my years of having horses that anything sprouting will just get either eaten or torn up by the hooves if it's a small area. Removed the horse and you have green stuff everywhere. Weed seeds are everywhere and prolific. Given a chance, old momma Nature will fill a bare...

Sometimes too, it depends on the breed and the strain. I never have a problem integrating younger with older. The only time the young ones really get picked at in my flock of buff Orps is when they don't respect their elders properly. Otherwise, the older ones ignore the young ones. When...
