Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

Even my relatively mature hens will lay a rubber egg from time to time, especially during times of stress. We had a heat wave come through (went from low 90s to almost 110) and because of a malfunction in my misters, I lost a number of hens, but some of the hens I didn't lose have laid some...

I have tried to fix prolapsed vents and one of two things seems to happen for me, whether I help or not: 1) It fixes itself 2) It gets worse and you have to cull I have actually had pretty good success, but you need to isolate her from the rest of the covey. The others will pick at her and...

Coturnix Quail Basics- Information and Pictures Galore

I've had a few of those myself. It's usually with younger hens that are still trying to work the kinks out. 10 bucks says that it is a double yolk. I only had 1 hen that was seriously injured by 1 of these. It's almost a survival of the fittest rite of passage in my flock.

I did 41 on Saturday and skinned them all. I'll try plucking at some point, but my free time is limited....haha

Just that some people have a hard time with things like that. I've never trimmed a beak myself, but have heard it can help. My numbers are high enough that I can just cull troublemakers. I would search beak trimming and see if that is something you'd bed comfortable with.

Assuming you don't have enough quail to justify just culling? I have a pen of hens I have kept around since they are great layers, but they won't tolerate a rooster, as in nearly killed two of them. You can trim the beak if you can stomach it. If either is injured, you need to separate the...

My latest batch turns 6 weeks on Sunday, so about the same age as yours. They are A&M, Pharoah and Tibetans. I noticed the first egg in the pen today, and some of the boys have been crowing for 10 days or so. The whole pen is for "freezer camp" so I have not been paying much attention, but...

Do you have lights on them to get 14 hours of light? Year and a half is up there, but not ridiculously old. Probably just a factor of the weather, in my opinion, but I would start making plans to replace them after this spring for sure.

Haha. That would explain it. I am getting 28-30/day. Lots of pickling these days...

Yeah, it's probably what you are NOT seeing when you are not around that is causing the female pattern baldness in your hens. :) How are your girls doing egg wise? Are you getting 3 eggs/day in that pen?

I personally would avoid doing that. Depends on the roo, but the two pens that I have with a 1:2 ratio are going to freezer camp as soon as I find time. The roos just torment the two hens, as it doesn't seem to be enough to keep him, hmmmmmm, busy otherwise. I have 100% fertility rate in...

I'm late to this conversation, and it sounds like they've been processed already, but to me, "necking" or quite bluntly, twisting and pulling the head off in one quick, strong movement is by far the fastest, quickest, and most humane way to dispatch these birds. Unless you are suffering from...
