Um... I just realized there are (counting Mama) 14 chickens on my front porch... FOURTEEN!!!!!These are shipped eggs!!! From North Carolina!!! To Connecticut!!!! In December!!!!! By my guestimation, there was only supposed to be 5 or 6 that hatched, at most...
THIRTEEN BABIES!!!!! out of 14...
Well- my 3 have somehow turned into at least 7, possibly 8, making this hatch more successful than I would ever have believed from eggs shipped in December!
Quite a surprise, considering I'd ever seen 3 when I last looked!
ETA--> Make that at least 9. There's a second tan one and a...
ACK!!! AN EGG SHELL!!! And a whole lot of peeping going on, as well!!!
I havent caught a glimpse of the baby yet, which is really okay considering the thermomter says its about 45 degrees in the broody box. Its exciting enough to know that there IS one!!! YEAY!!!
LOL! I DO!!!! But I value my hands & eyes, so I wont! I'm fairly sure one of them is out & wiggling around. She keeps sitting up, craning her neck & tucking *something* underneath her breast feathers. She's facing the wrong way for me to see much of anything tho. I'll be sure to get pics when I...
I went to give Matilda (my broody sitting on bantam eggs) a snack just now & heard distinct PEEPING!!!!! It sounds like one may be out or nearly so- it was pretty loud, and there were some softer peeps (from inside the shell?) as well. Either way, Matilda kept up a series of low clucks (and...
I still dont know for sure. Of the 28 eggs I set, only 13 made it to lockdown. Of those 13, only 10 hatched. They were shipped, so I expected a crappy hatch rate. The chicks did good for about 5 days & then one morning they started dying, one after another. In the end, I lost 6- including one...
I think being unattached has more to do with the fact that I lost 6 of the 10 chicks that I hatched in November and the memory still stings. If I get attached to these ones & something horrible happens, again, it may put me off of ever hatching again. It hurt too much, kwim? Not handling them...
I checked a couple of eggs while my broody was stretching her legs & getting some breakfast. She's on day 14 & of the 6 (out of 13) I was able to check, ALL of them had obvious development, 2 were moving & I could even see the little feet in one!!! I have no clue how the other 7 are doing...

I would go for it if she is settled in
I have a broody light Sussex sitting on RIR eggs:-) Deb
... done! 14 mixed bantams and 1 irretrievable green plastic easter egg are all nestled in place under a sleeping Matilda! Let the waiting begin!
My broody, Matilda, is all moved into her new diggs. For a second, I thought she was going to reject her little house, but the second I showed her the fake eggs she tucked them under her belly, sat down & hissed at me when I opened to door to put her water dish in the crate. I guess she's happy...
I know I said I wouldnt, but count me in, too! My EE "Matilda" has decided to go broody and very stubbornly refuses to be broken, so I bought her some mixed bantam eggs to appease her (and hopefully get that olive-green-egg-layin', fluffy, black, diva-butt back to work!). They just arrived...
