funny, i have the same draw to the dark eyes! and mine are smaller than marans, about the same size as cream legbars, a little larger than my campines. lovely delicate birds that yes, are tough.
actually, that's interesting to know -- as my oldest pullet from Dana's first shipment of eggs has just reached POL, and is producing sort of peach-colored eggs. she definitely hatched from one of those gorgeous-colored ones, so not sure what's going on -- am not sure whether to try breeding...
unluck, most definitely! my postal driver is actually incredibly careful with the box (i've given him some eggs from the laying flock, so he has a vested interest), but it makes me wonder whether one of the transfer stations the eggs must move through to get to me is particularly rough, since...
i've gotten three shipments from Dana, the first took 3 days (from San Diego to Sonoma County), the other two were on time in two days -- and the only one with a broken egg was this last box, one out of 18 broke.
but that first shipment (a dozen eggs, i think) produced one chick, the second...
@dfdesigns was kind enough to send me a box of eggs last week, so 17 isbar eggs have now been in the incubator for a week, and I just candled them: one absolutely developing, one probably, three maybes, five probably-nots, and seven definitely-nots (most with completely detached air cells). i...
so here are my blue isbar/SFH crosses, all three of which (out of 3 eggs set) hatched overnight:
one splash and two blacks! they look very isbar-ish to start, but i'll be interested to see if/when the distinctive SFH flocking starts kicking in!
this is a picture of their mom, the swedish...
for the record, i didn't "make" the isbar/marans crosses, i picked them up as pullets from a friend because they are pretty birds -- that was before i decided to focus on isbars as a breed. i actually like the lighter green eggs better than the olive, but these two are lovely birds, and i enjoy...
sad to report that the little black isbar chick, who hatched slower and later than the rest, has not made it -- just not strong enough. but the other five chicks are doing great on day 5.
re: the isbar/marans cross, i didn't "make" them myself, but got hatching eggs from a friend -- and yes, her plan was to make olive-colored eggs. which worked!
in this photo, the isbar/marans cross egg is second from the right, very true-olive, not at all pastel.
i believe she used a blue...
i took some pictures of my gang today, and here are a few isbars and isbar/marans crosses:
Blue (male) is all isbar, Mabel (blue) and Fern (black) are isbar/marans crosses
Miss Fern!
Blue
Mabel
and two splash isbar pullets, who are still teenagers
her name is Beatrice

i wasn't sure it was ever going to hatch, it pipped but then sat there for 24 hours with no movement at all... finally hatched overnight, but it's definitely smaller and weaker than the others...
and my hatches of shipped eggs are getting better, but slowly -- there were 4 or 5 clears, and...
one- and two-day-old isbar chicks! hatched from eggs sent by @dfdesigns
one splash, still trying to figure out how legs work
one black, the last to hatch and *tiny* -- i'm giving it vitamins
and two blues, ridiculously cute.
yay!
i have tried hatching isbar eggs twice now, first hatch got one out of 11, second was 2 out of 7 -- but both batches of eggs were shipped, and i am VERY new with the incubator, so doubt that the blame lies with the eggs themselves. am hoping to try once more after the holidays, if I can get...
and I will add that your eggs have beautifully colored shells! i'd love to get some more at some point, although have a bunch of Mary's isbar eggs in the incubator right now, hopefully hatching this weekend...
actually, given the crazy malfunctioning incubator at the start, i was completely surprised (and delighted) that ANY hatched -- and two is better than one! I will probably try to hatch some more, although i may look around for some more local eggs that wouldn't have to go through the post...
sadly, no, none of the others even pipped -- i'm afraid they may have gotten too jumbled by the postal service (it took 3 days instead of 2), and/or the temp problems the incubator had at the start? several of them clearly had started developing, but then quit at some point...
but the little...
