Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Looks like a hen so far. You should know in another week or so for sure. If the feathers start to grow in darker (especially on the chest) is is a boy.

This is the portion of the wing known as the triangle. Wheatens should have a brown triangle, whereas Black Copper Marans should have a solid black wing with no triangle. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but that is what I was told.

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Recently I posted photos of the cockerels I got last year. They were a bit older and not tame. The guy I got them from caught them in a net, stuck them in a carrier, and I didn't have a chance to look at them before I took them home. Now that they are getting a bit tamer, I noticed they all...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

They were hatched in 2014. I don't know what line they are from . A local breeder ordered Wheaten eggs and every single one of them were cockerels. He got rid of all of them and I got these three.

Quote: I couldn't decide which of the three cockerels to keep based on color, so I'm going to go off of personality I guess. They are all very sweet, but #1 is much more pushy and aggressive already than the other two. I like #2 because his comb is smaller, but I know that will likely change...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

These guys were really hard to photograph, plus the lighting in the winter isn't the best. There are three cockerels, all brothers. I was told a month ago that they were 2 months old, but I suspect they are now closer to 5 months. Cockerel #1 is the bigger of the three. He also has the...

I will get pics of them. They like to hide in the trees and usually only come out in the afternoon. They are rough looking - just a warning in advance! They were a bit scrawny when I got them. Now they are molting.

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Today I was out spending some time with my cockerels. They are finally adjusting to life that offers them outdoor time and free-ranging. They don't know how to roost yet though, and their feathers are a bit rough looking. I'm sure they are close to 5 months old since they are pretty big and...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Just picked up a couple of Wheaten cockerels since I can't find any hatching eggs. I'll be breeding my hen this spring and hopefully hatching some chicks. Right now the hen is breed with a crested cream legbar. If I wanted I could hatch some olive eggers, but it is not a good time a year to...

Mine is not laying either. She's taking her sweet old time growing her feathers back in. My other Marans went broody again, so now all I'm getting is boring light brown eggs from the other hens. LOL

My wheaten is molting badly, too. She is the worst of all my chickens - no tail feathers and none on her head. I'm hoping she'll start laying again in January.

My Wheaten is also molting (badly) and stopped laying. I've been looking for some hatching eggs but can't find any. The one cockerel I was going to keep for breeding has some weird coloring and I'll probably end up having to cull him. Wheatens are very hard to find in my area, but I love them!

LOL I have a hen that bites even when she's not broody. My Wheaten is fairly neutral, but I suspect if she were broody she would be considerably more aggressive.

Thanks for the input! The cockerel's legs have always been white. It is hard to tell in the photos.

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Here are my 6 week old chicks. The cockerel is supposed to be a full Wheaten Marans. He looks like one to me. What do you all think? The pullet has yellowish legs, therefore I am assuming she is a mix. She hatched out of a Marans eggs but I think daddy might be an RIR. The pullet also...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

In my area there seems to be a "shortage" of Wheaten Marans. I just hatched one baby cockerel that I hope to breed to my hen in the spring. She lays gorgeous, jumbo dark brown eggs. The cockerel has nicely feathered legs and has a wonderful personality (so far). I'm a little concerned with...

Wheaten and Blue wheaten Marans Discussion Thread

Out of four Marans eggs my broody hatched out, I ended up with three chicks. I'm pretty sure I have one cockerel (on the bottom), a pullet in the middle, and the one on the top I think is a cross with a Rhode Island Red. Opinions? Do these guys look like Wheaten Marans? They are two weeks...
