Starting 38 brown cots tomorrow. Should hatch right after the batch of 17 are ready to graduate to the freezer. Hope not all hatch or I'll run out of grow-out pens. What a problem to have very fertile eggs, huh?
I agree. Is that a refrigerator that's had a heater added to it? I'd love to see more pictures of how this was done. Not that I'd have the space for that many birds. I barely have room for the 20 I just hatched last week. No idea what I'd do with all those.
Spent the day building the new much larger brooder and moved my 7 chicks to it this evening. They are on pine shavings now that I am fairly sure they are out of the hard part of being a newborn. Some of them even already have their tiny pin feathers on their wings. Forgot how fast these guys...
Well my little small one was gone this morning. Personally, I am glad because it means he did not suffer long. The remaining 7 are all very healthy, running around eating, drinking and pooping and now I'm about to be off to build a larger brooder for them and then a grow-out cage. Got more...
Lost one of my 9 so I'm down to 8. One is much smaller and hardly moves around although he seems plenty active if I try to hold him. I think he probably won't make it though. I think some chicks just have that failure to thrive thing.
Good luck. I just went through my second hatch and I can tell you the first time I was way too impatient. Just be patient and let them do what they do. Chances are good that if they can't get out on their own, they weren't meant to get out. Also, don't worry about taking the new ones out of...
With that many birds, how many waterers and feeding stations do you have? You can add vitamins in the water. Did the dead ones have any other symptoms?
I always dip each bird's beak in the water the minute it goes into the brooder so it will know where to find water after that.
Thanks. I checked them all this morning and none of them moved or had any pipping going on. Now I can start my next batch of eggs. Oh and join Egg Incubators Anonymous.
Well the little guy I tried to help didn't make it. I think I got him out of the egg too late and he just struggled too long. It was almost 24 hours before I got him out. Still have my 9 and about 10 eggs left in the incubator. I didn't hear any peeping from the eggs and I'm not sure how to...
Ok, I got his head unstuck. He is still breathing but just weak and floppy. Left him in incubator. Hope he pulls through. Poor guy. He's a little fighter.
Finally pulled the shell off my little straggler. It is still breathing but not unbent and seems to have its head stuck to its wing feathers. I don't know if I should try to wash it to help it finally get out of its egg shape or what. It did also have a little bit of the yolk still out so I...
Another hatched early this morning so that brings me to 9 now. He's still wet so I'm leaving him in the incubator until after work. The zipped egg is still moving and I could see a bit of feather and fluff sticking out one side so I expect him to join us sometime today. All eight in the...
Eight in the brooder. Still have eggs but not sure how many more will hatch. There is one fully zipped, moving around but the membrane is still holding it in. I don't know how long he's been like that but I'm going to leave him at least overnight since he is still moving, I assume he's...
My humidity has dropped way down in the past 24 hours but I can't really change anything right now as they are in lockdown. I have 2 chicks hatched so far and one pipping as of this morning. Just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best. I will take the hatched chicks out tonight and try...
Back from vacation and the incubator did not dry out as I thought it might. We are on day 9 now so rapidly approaching hatch day. I am still only able to get the hygrometer reading up to 44-45% and that is with both the plugs closed. I will open it when hatch date is closer but I worry about...
