i give them greens...a hanging cabbage ball everyday (that is if they finish the first one), or in freezing temps i give them shredded cabbage, i buy the bags that say coleslaw..it has a few carrots in it too. and fruit, sometimes grapes, apples and watermelon. I also visit alot and talk to...
Love the Reds..i have three Red Stars and they give the biggest eggs...i have one that is always a double yolk and one day a few weeks ago it had three yolks in it...wow...that one was a biggie! She is also off the roost in the dark and lays guess .she is a loner..
i have 15 chickens...and get 10 to 14 eggs everyday even though its winter...they are young birds though 10 months old.....i give mine something different everydy..it keeps them curious..they love a hanging cabbage ball...keeps them busy for a day or two...i love spoiling them!
yes..this summer i am going to get a couple cats...and i love snakes so might get a few black snakes to boot..lol..so far i have seen no signs in the coop anymore of digging holde from the rats or mice..no "pooh" either, so i think what was left that i didnt get in traps or that ate the poison...
the blocks are great, but beware you have to take thm in at night .because having them in the coop will call in rats!!! ughhh..talking from experieince, and it took a week of traps and poison to get rid of them, plus taking all food sources out of the coop at night...just a warning to help out!
use dry corn and seed mix.in the bottle with holes drilled in it. I also give them shredded cabbage and carrots when its too cold for cabbage head, due to it freezing.
we have apple trees and in the fall when apples fall off trees..they peck at the apples but dont eat the seeds...they seem to know...and if i hold an apple now,in the winter, for them they eat all around the seeds...too funny!!
i go into town in the fall and take bags of leave people have raked up..they love it and my girls love to scratch around in them...its great mulch too. Also there are lots of ticks and bugs in there that chickens really love!! lol
i hang a cabbage head about 8 inches off the coop floor, my girls love to peck at it while it swings around, it keeps them from being bored..also ive seen some people put in a mirror, im guessing not a glass one, and a xylophone toy for them to peck at to make sound. i go in the coop often and...
