Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

that's why I really don't want a chick here. It's awful regardless but I really like getting the grown out birds although I pay a lot. $100 for the 2 showgirls shipped from IL to OH. Pretty price for 2 chickens! That could get it (but I won't think like that!). Those ee's were very...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

I hope not...but it doesn't sound too promising :( I think being back here is bringing back up all of my anger towards Mareks.

The only one I had to put down was the poor accidental rooster. I've always given them time in the house and when I just don't think they will improve, I take them in. I can't do it myself, nor could my husband. I sure wish more breeders would vaccinate. you can say that again!

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

I lost all of my original 8 unvaccinated birds to it. I hate it more than I can say as I'm sure we all do. My chickens are my pets. I got 2 ee's grown out vaccinated and one got it (I think it was the visceral form). I had to have her put down and a roo who I got grown out and he should...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

my birds who had paralysis took a while. It's very sad and heartbreaking to watch. They would show signs of paralysis, then I'd bring them in the house and they never got better. I'd have them in for a couple weeks usually before I'd have them put to sleep. They would eat and act happy but...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

It's hard to say if it's mareks, sounds like it could be but not sure. If I were you, I'd wait on the chicks until you find out from the lab. That's just me though. If you did, I'd vaccinate right away, some people vaccinate twice. Keep them away from any other chickens you have for as long...

well, just know if you take them (I know I would vs cull them), you're taking mareks. Hard decision!

oh my! that's so sad. I have deep litter in for winter, never had an issue with feet. I heat mine though just b/c I feel bad. I know it's not recommended.

Kathy - why would that matter? Just curious. My d'uccle got frostbite last year. I don't keep water in the coop in the cold, but they did all sleep on the floor. No roos left so I don't have to worry, but I wonder why. jgoldy - I hope it wasn't mareks!

jgoldy - I haven't read all of the recent posts here but if your hen died of mareks and was around your other chickens at any point, they all have been exposed. It doesn't kill everyone at the same time. I lost mine over months, even close to a year or more.

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

I'm so sorry :( I've lost all of my original chickens and even a vaccinated one. It's awful and there are no words to describe the devastation it can cause. This forum was a lifesaver for me. I currently have only vaccinated girls who were older when I got them. I hope they all do well.

I don't think it sounds at all like Mareks. I'm not sure what it might be though. I'd guess vitamin deficiency but that's a lot of birds to have a deficiency bad enough to kill them. Do they get any vitamins?

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

oh no, I'm so sorry. It's a sad and devastating thing to get and maddening. I've lost all of my initial chickens since last year. Mareks can hit at any time, any age. I had a few made it thru winter and then wham, as soon as it warmed up there it was. From what I've learned Virkon-S will...

he was gone before I got home. I do just assume it's mareks. Although now that you've mentioned it, my last 3 have died very fast, no paralysis. my husband buried him so I didn't have to see him, I feel like I couldn't take that. I was gone all week so I don't know for sure but I think he...

No, he's breathing fine and it hasn't been very hot. I think Saturday might have gotten up to 85 and Sunday wasn't hot and neither was yesterday. I looked again and his one eye "might" look a little off but I really can't tell.

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

karen - I don't know. I don't see him making it through tomorrow. I got home yesterday around 7 and I suspected a problem. This morning I was sure. I could get (is it corid?) to treat for cocci. I don't know what he could have eaten, my husband took care of them and only gave scratch and...

Not an Emergency...Marek's in the Flock

I'm so upset I keep crying - my Sassy boy is sick now. I know he'll die and I just can't stand it. I am done with chickens. I might move to Florida and can't take them anyways. I don't know what to do with them. No one wants mareks carriers. I only have one who isn't vaccinated and he'll...
