Well I lost one of the four remaining chicks, one never pipped even though I could hear it for hours trying. an Eggtopsy showed that it was like my others that were mispositioned. Head under foot at the side of the egg and back and neck up where the air cell was. What I have observed through...
Well, I'm in the final stages of the last set from this hatch. It has been a busy week and ten of the chicks have already found new homes. My kids installed branches for the chicks to roost on and they have taken to them already. Not even a week old and they are flying up and roosting! My store...
Don't have an official count yet but it looks like I have over 60 chicks from this hatch. Had to assist 4 that had position issues. Lost one that I waited to long to assist, and 3 that were rescued using knowledge gleaned from BYC - THANKS. There are still 5 eggs that haven't pipped, I guessing...
Video of my first hatch. There 26 new peeps in the house so far. 9 to go from this set, We will be moving the second set into the hatcher this afternoon.
19 chicks as of this morning. All but 4 have pipped from this set of 35. I'll post a video or picture soon.
Very early this morning I opened the hatcher to add water and do a little quick housekeeping and one of the chicks kicked out an egg that had not pipped. It fell 3 feet to the floor and...
Eggs are pipping!!
I'm not ready, they are two days early.
There has been little progress in the last couple of hours. is it normal for the chicks to take an extended break before zipping?
There isn't as much chirping as there was initially, should I be concerned.
As of last night any of the lighter colored eggs that can be lit well have kicking chicks and they are a lot more defined than the one in the video I posted. It is amazing, I wish there was someway to back light and put them on display 24/7. Of course I probably wouldn't get any sleep.
Candled a few eggs tonight and found some very active embryos getting some exercise. The video was done in the dark with a cheap camera phone so its not the best quality. But it still very exciting.
cut PVC rings, that is a great idea. I could easily pull that off. In fact I wish I had, the wire was a real pain to work with. Thanks for sharing your find.
Candled all the eggs tonight and removed the non fertile. Only found 2 quitters in the whole bunch. There are 60 developing nicely, 1 with the embryo opposite the air sack, and 5 that we could not determine due to the pigmentation of the shell
No they are not automatic. we just tip the baskets back and forth several times a day. The ends of the pipe act as a pivot. It will be easy to set it up as an auto turner at a later date, but for now we are enjoying the direct involvement in the process.
I candled a dozen eggs from the first set that I was worried that I cooked and found ten of them were clearly fertile and I could observe heartbeats in at least 6 of them !!!
Here is one of the baskets I built for the incubator. It's just some hardware cloth screwed to a pvc pipe. The white strips are weatherstripping to help pad and secure the eggs. The screw by my hand is the tipping lever, it also keeps the baskets from rolling all the way over.
All the eggs are in the wire baskets now and air circulation should at it's best. I noticed the humidity has dropped and have added a water reservoir in the bottom.
