Here are some recent pictures
Chocolate Hens (Orpington/Ameraucana cross) and their sons (Black/split for chocolate, my black Araucana is their sire)
My LF Chocolate Araucana Project
Their offspring
2 older pullets.
A younger offspring, appears to be a cockerel. (I hope)
First off, you have to know if this chocolate color is made from the Dun gene or the Recessive/Sex linked chocolate gene. I'm betting yours is dun.
But, you can't know which for sure, until you breed or unless you know which breed was used to bring in the color since the genes are well known in...
That is incorrect. If she is chocolate, none of her chicks will show chocolate coloring but all of her sons will carry it. If she is dun, half the pullets and half the cockerels will be dun. This is definitely not a mutation. The dun and chocolate genes are not new and they were introduced...
In the end, it's still going to be breeding that will tell you want you're asking. If she's dun, you'll hatch some like her. If she's chocolate, none of the chicks will be chocolate but all of her sons will carry it.
You commented about some "others" that sounded more like dun, where are they?
She's wanting to know if you can tell her pullet is dun or recessive chocolate. In an earlier post, I think she stated some had more of a cooler tone than this pretty chocolate so I'm guessing Dun. She wanted to know now, hoping that there was something to tell her like shafting or under color...
I just saw that your post above that some of the dun colored chicks were bluish or cool toned at hatching. If that is the case then I would bet they are all dun based :-)
I've seen pics of much lighter chocolate porcelain than this one. Still don't think you'll know for sure till you breed that pullet. Do you have pics in chick down? My fun chicks have had a bluish tone rather than typical chocolate.
I have a pure, fun only chick the same age as the rec chic chick above. I'll take pictures tomorrow. Either way, the gene was introduced somewhere in the background whether she is rec chic or choc fun. Either way, I really like her and I want to see some porcelain crossing to her lol
Here is a close up of the face of one of my recessive chocolate Araucana project chicks. They even have chocolate brown eyes
The red marker was for my own marker for me to see if this spot grew out some tufts
I love that mottled one. So it's not a crossbred project? Pure D'Uccle? Cool ;)
Now I want you to make it with Lavender to make that chocolate porcelain color.......Please! LOL
Not likely a mutation if she's actually dun or chocolate. If she doesn't breed as a dun or chocolate, she's a...
Here are some updated photo's of one of my dun, Sumatra hens after her molt. Her color is more even now that the sun burnt feathering is gone.
Here is one of my chicks out of my dun hens, this one may be both dun chocolate plus sex linked chocolate.
Here is a dun chick, mother is one of my Dun Sumatra hens above. Sire is a half Araucana, half Orpington/Ameraucana cockerel in my chocolate project pen (Araucana's). Taken today. She really didn't want to face the camera
You can see more difference with her and one of my black Araucana...
Do they come in black? That would be the best if you want solid dun. There are others who would disagree but I do not believe there is Dun in the Serama breed. There are good duns in the OEG's. There are 2 types of chocolate, the Dun type and the Recessive type. If you want recessive...
Tony, Since it's spring (nearly) I thought I'd bump up this thread to see how last summers hatches went from your brown hens?
These last photo's look absolutely Blue to me. The rooster has a bit of red leakage. I've had Araucana's that color. Did you mate that hen and rooster? I would...
