Not sure how to cure your hen problem. Why do they always want the same nests? I see that at my place too.
You might want to take a couple of eggs that have been laid and place them in other nesting boxes.
The few times I removed eggs from the lower nests and put them in the upper ones...
Rural King in La Salle, Il (just off of Interstate 80) has chicks and ducklings.
I picked up some Welsummer chicks this morning. Found the staff in the chick department to be attentive and very interested in helping customers.
They are planning to keep a stock of chicks until October
I have butchered my own chickens and taken others to a butcher.
We have been raising our own beef for the last couple of years. We send them to a butcher.
I would rather eat our own chickens and beef because I know what we are feeding them and it sure beats the heck out of that stuff in...
I always think the activity from a rooster is hilarious. Seems that hens are too stupid to know where and when to lay eggs so the rooster has to show them lol
I had a cochin banty checking out the nest and sitting him them for several weeks before she finally laid and egg.
That's what I do too.
I have a small dog cage ...when a hen gets broody I set the cage on the roosts... remove the pan...and put the hen inside. I will give her water and food...and leave her there for a couple of days. It usually doesnt take more than 2 to 4 days before she changes her mind...
eracer I don't know what the recommended ratio is for roosters to hens. I have 21 hens and 2 roosters. The roosters are just under a year old. I will allow them to live together until one of them becomes dominant and they begin to fight. So far everyone is quiet and getting along.
As soon as...
Got my fingers crossed for a couple of good hatches this year. Incubator is full of maran eggs and white cochin banties.
If the muscovies would start laying I could fill another incubator with duck eggs.
I live in Northern Illinois.
Be very careful about roosters. Many complaints come because of the roosters.
Don't forget the flies. Be courteous of your neighbors and keep the flies controlled.
thank you sheila but decatur is a bit farther than I care to travel just for one bird right now.
tbitt... I don't need any more obligations, so I won't be showing chickens. I want to find show breeders to insure that the chickens I raise will look closer to standard.
I would like to find some...
wowzer. over 120 pages in the Illinois Thread!!
I don't have time to read through every post to find out where everyone lives.
Does anyone live in the Rockford/La Salle/ Dixon/Sterling/Tampico area?
I am looking for someone who raises show quality cochin banties.
