good to know, it's pretty durable so I don't think it'll be an issue any time soon... I want it in a different place or a different in-the-coop system all together.
Thank you all for your help and suggestions! I'm pretty happy with it we just finished last night!
well, sorta, the run has some more roofing that needs to be done, once that is done it'll be about as preditor proof as I would know how to make it (hardware cloth on ALL open areas including roof...
a Little update on my coop, I'm not a pro, so it's a little wonky and the run wasn't well thought out :/ but I like it so far!
Oh, and we dumped the pine shavings from the brooder in there before we realized they are a bad idea (wanting to do deep litter out and deep bedding in)
I'll have some...
Started the coop this weekend...4x8, raised, extra run space underneath, it'll have 4ft high walls and a lean-to style roof. I like the idea of being able to push my wheelbarrow up to it for clean-out.
We had some wood given and sold to us from other people that helped with the cost. I...
OFF TOPIC:
As we are getting the brooder ready, and the excitement is building, I'm starting to think through more... we have a privacy fence around our back yard, it's old and in some places has some small holes or areas underneath where groundhogs, squirrels, and such get through.
How big of...
OK, I'll stop reviving this post soon, it'll be build time this weekend.
I found an article that mentioned you shouldn't have a dirt floor in a coop, it makes cleaning out the bedding harder and makes it easier for rats/mice to get in. but a hoop coop is a dirt floor... so, how is it working...
Yea, I must not be very good at planning these things, priced the materials for a hoop coop, still coming in around $1200...
Maybe I'm over thinking it, but I'm trying to do a mix between Chook-a-holic and Ms Biddys designs.
It's the stinking sheet goods at $65/ea. Maybe I don't go conventional and make the spacing of studs bigger than 16 OC. They are running almost $7/ea, and I need a ton of those
I'm holding out for some used/spare goods from facebook and such. I have a week before the chicks hatch and a few...
Well Biscuits....
it looks like over $1200 for just the wood... stupid covid
that almost the same price as getting an OverEZ coop. I'd like to build but that's just as much and completed, thoughts?
I've been searching and putting posts online (facebook) for used/left over lumber, dry as a...
Yea, not a builder so I didn't know about the roof slope being too much.
It's simple enough to make it 4x8, takes some of the math out, but won't it be too big?
my "legal" limit is 6 chickens; 5 hens + 1 rooster, but I'm fudging that to 6 hens no rooster
I played with sketch-up a little and made a lean-too design. I expect it'll be easier, less expensive, and quicker to build. I really like the monitor roof design, but I don't think I have the building skills to make it well. This seems more suited to my skill set.
I made this from scratch...
Thanks! ...mechanical design class many years ago, it turned out to be a super helpful class for me later in life (woodworking, garden design, this type of stuff)
The top of the roost is 18" above the lip of nest, but you suggest it should be about 12" above the nest itself? if so, that'll be...
