They do if you get what we do, mini-pellets. Tucker Milling and Faithway Feeds both offer mini-pellets, which my tiny Belgian D'Anvers eat just fine. They are very small layer pellets, which come in either 16% or 22% protein.
I free range my main flock most days. The feeders are...
My oldest hen is just past her 6th hatchday. She hasn't laid in over a year, lives with the bantams, being the last remaining of my original hens. The others died of internal laying and the last had ovarian carcinoma. Sunny shows no signs of any issues, just ran out of eggs, I guess.
You're welcome!
Oh, this week, I have had TWO hens start back laying after a one YEAR vacation each! Can you believe it? One is over 5 years old, a Buff Brahma, and one is about 4 years old, a splash Ameraucana. Astounding. Now, out of 24 hens in the main laying flock (I have two other...
If they are getting decent layer pellets, they are fine. Go easy on the treats if they aren't eating, but if they are eating layer feed all day while you're at work, they really don't need anymore food overnight anyway.
Yup, another one in the main flock started back, one of my 5 yr old Barred Rock hens. Now, I have 14 out of 19 laying again, just not every day. Of the five not yet back in production, there is a 5 yr old Buff Brahma, two almost-four-yr-old Ameraucanas, one of the Delawares and my black Rock...
Nope, not bragging, just letting folks know there is hope! The ones starting back laying again haven't laid in many months and most are older birds, three-and-a-half to five years old.
My main flock of 19 layers is back up to 12 laying again. That includes many in the 3-5 year old range. I have three other groups as well, but many of those are younger birds.
Got 4 from the main laying flock, plus several from the younger crowd so can't complain with the weather as nasty cold as it was today. One more brutally cold night, then temps going up.

Sorry, can't reply right now, I'm looking at Seed catalogs.....I have FIVE of them in the house since December 25th. Spring is just around the corner, I can feel it.
Spring, spring, spring...c'mon, chant with me...spring, spring, spring....

If you ever had any roosters laying, you could make a fortune. Wouldn't eat any rooster who ever laid an egg.
My main laying flock of 19 hens are up to 7 laying now. For ages, only 2-3 were laying, so slowly, they're coming back into production.
LOL@ Cass!
Usually, pullets lay fine through the winter their first year. It's as they get older that they take longer and longer cold weather breaks, seems to me. I do have two pullets who started, laid a couple of weeks, then quit, but they are really unusual. The rest the same age are...
You'd think Cass was the assigned thread monitor for this one as much time as she spends answering questions on it. Thanks for keeping track of it, Cass!
