My dog got sick from eating chicken pooo

Well the first day we brought home our pullets my dog decided to eat chicken poo. He got so sick and it went through him like mud and messed our whole house up. My wife almost made me get rid of the chickens that do. Now they have to stay in their run and chicken coop and are not allowed to wander around the backyard like I was hoping. Do you think this would happen again if I let them out? Is it harmful for my dog to eat chicken poo? Sad but true...
 
Lots of dogs eat the chicken poop... not sure what happened to make yours so sick.. is it possible there was a coincidence and he/she at something else that made them sick? Well.. perhaps its just bad for your dog..

our seem fine, we have to keep track of them more with our freerangers to make sure they aren't eating large amounts of it. I worm the dogs, & worm the chickens... I only worry about that harm... the worms exchange between the two.
 
Our dog (German Shepherd) is hopeless obsessed with eating our chickens poop. She'll come back into the house with her nose all dusty from rooting around in the pine shavings that fell out of the coop. It's totally disgusting, but so far she hasn't seemed to of gotten sick from it. She sure is hard headed tho - she'll be let out to "take a break" and instead she'll make a beeline over to the coop to see what's new with the poop. She'll refuse to come when I'm calling her when she's 'nose to the ground' hunting the goods.

I'm not quite sure it was chicken poo that made him sick. Did he by chance get into any chocolate? Or onions? I know those two things will give the dog runs. My dogs eat chicken poo all the time and I know many others here talking about their dogs eating it.
Although it very well could be I guess...but IMO not very likely. I hope your wife will let you try again. Nothing beats watching chickens run around your yard. It's just awesome!

It could be that the chickens had been fed something that didn't set right with your dog's digestive system -- something that you may not be feeding them anymore. When I first got my chickens, my youngest dog wanted to eat them. Now he's quite content to let them live to make more poo for him. lol
 
My vet told me that my chickens could not make my dog ill. That doesn't keep him from getting sick from eating sticks, rocks, rotten stuff, old rags...

My dogs will eat chicken poop, cat poop, cat puke, rotten food and anything else they can get their little mouths on. If I catch them eating something disgusting, I lock them in the kitchen (tile food)..... much easier to clean up.

My enormous dog eats chicken droppings (and any others: horse being a favorite) all the time. Like the earlier correspondent, I've discussed it with the vet who assures me it's harmless.

Could it be related to the dog's size? It is small or young? Or maybe it was just too much of a good thing?
 
If your dog has never been exposed to anything like that before he probably went overboard on a digestive tract that wasn't used to it. Dogs always do that when we first let them out around the horses. They'll gobble down horse manure and make themselves sick. It comes back out of both ends.

After the first time or 2 they realize it's not a good idea to eat that much and their digestive tract builds up the correct bacteria to digest it so it is no longer a problem. If anything manure from mostly herbivorous animals is good for dogs. It gives them a boost of the good bacteria needed to digest food. Most digestive tract upsets come from an improper balance of bacteria and often times feeding back manure from a healthy animal will actually prevent things like diarrhea.
