Hooray for the end of the move. Amazing job on all the construction. Moving is hard enough let alone moving all the birds. Sound like a crazy idea I would try.

Where's the splashes? How many cockerels/pullets did you end up with?

after my chicks were born, I moved them to the grow out shed. One morning I went down to check on All my babies. The power in the shed had went out. I lost a lot of chicks that night. It was a few months ago. I'm still sick about it. I only ended up with four barnenvelders.... None of the slash made it..
Crappy crappy crappy!.

chkndaddy,
No message from the local that was trying JG's. You might try posting on the Stockton show thresd. There will be another show in Anderson in late March also. Might be an option.

Boy am I tired. Tomorrow is the big move day but I did take a few loads today but the main goal of today was the 2 breeder pens for the Crele's and the Emp's.
I put up 18 more 5" x 8 ft peeler cores and used 36 bags of 50 lb cement today. I still need to turn the coop more north and level the coop and add the No climb fence and poultry netting on top.
This will happen tomorrow if the concrete cures enough after I move all the heavy stuff into the house.
Here is the first run.

We decided on a name since we are also going into the Blueberry Business.

Hangtown Farms ( since Placerville was once called Hangtown )

It looks great!

Oooooooh, I LOVE blueberries!!!!

IIRC, it was a GLW that would not take the babies. She did try to kill them, but I knew it might not work from the beginning, so I was keeping a close watch. The ones that have abandoned the nests have been BOs. They were also all first time sitters. I have heard that sometimes they do better the next time around.

The BO that is broody now is a first timer. I am not really happy with the spot she picked. It is in a dark corner of the barn.

Thank you, I will avoid the GLW and BOs for broody hens... The Phoenix and the Silkie were both first time brooders, and they did (and are still doing) great with the kids. I don't know if the Phoenix would pick on chicks that don't look like hers though - because all of the eggs she hatched are hers. The Silkie has a mixed bunch - and she takes care of them all (black, blue, silver and orange). None of my EEs have ever gone broody on me, so I think that must have been bred out of them.

Your property is sure beautiful! I've only been to Placerville once, my MIL wanted to go to Apple Hill. My dad told me it used to be called Hangtown but they changed the name to be more politically correct. Very nice run and coop. How many plants are you going to be putting in the ground?

Crack one of the eggs and check for a bullseye in the blastoderm.
I"ve got some 8 month old boys, one I'm sure is feetile, but the other two don't seem to be. The old barred rock is fertile now also.
I only have hens (bummer). She's sitting on a nest with no eggs at the moment. She even stopped laying again!! after starting up again when the days got longer.

Yesterday my cat showed up after being gone for a week. He had a broken back leg, think he got hit by a car. Rushed him to emergency, it was bad news, they were going to have to amputate the leg, going to cost a fortune. So on the day of my daughter's 3rd birthday party, I had to have my cat put to sleep. I had hoped this year was going to start out better but that's not a very good start.
