Hey Texans…
This foolish New England girl went for a walk and ended up with hands full of prickly pear spines. 🤪
Any advice? Or does everyone down here just know not to touch those things??

Also, what are these little guys? Seedpods? My shoes are full of them and they’re prickly too…

:frow Welcome and yes, most everything in Texas either pokes, sticks, stabs, or stings you - and that's not just the vegetation!

If you're inclined to wander around the cacti 😉, watch out for the little hair spines, those are the devil to pick out. Try sticky tape to pull them out if tweezers can't do it. If you want to collect the tuna (prickly pear fruits) use tongs.

The velcro burrs are probably one of the many grassy weeds we have here. Which part of the state are you wandering around in?

You need to get those little needles out first and then pee on it. 🤣 kidding that's an old wives' tale. Do get the quills out, then put some alcohol or witch hazel on it. Follow with Caladrel or benadryl cream.

I have no idea what those white fuzzy things are but yes... it's best to AVOID cactus. If you can't pluck them out with tweezers, try duct tape. It works so well, though, you might accidently wax your hairs.

Texas is like the Australia of the US... lots of bites, stings, and sticker burs.
 
We had a lot of bull nettles when I was growing up. The white flowering kind that are low to the ground. They had a wonderful tasting kernel, similar to a sunflower seed but getting to it was hazardous. Thats where my "pee on it" knowledge comes from. My grandfather was certain that worked. He also spit tobacco on wasp stings so...
