I got started on the coop this weekend. First, I laid down some RR ties and filled in a yard and a half of wash rock (by hand with a shovel...WHEW!) to build up this area of the yard. It was always soggy for a few days after a good rain. My bro-in-law came over yesterday and we got after it. I had a general idea of what I wanted. Based it off of the Wichita Cabin Coop. It's 10' x 6' give or take a few inches. Coop is 3'x6'. Front wall is 80" slopping to 74". The sides of the coop will be veneered in some rough cut cherry to give it a rustic look. Most of the 8ft. 2x4's were reused wood. My dad-in-law gave me the brown paint...been sitting in his garage for a long time. The metal roof came off of a porch I help tear down. Not all recycled stuff...but some. Oops...just realized I can't post a pic yet... I'll post a pic when my "newbie" status is upgraded.

Here's the progress so far...

Got a little more work done on the coop today. I thought about painting the coop but I think I'm gonna leave it "au natural". i know some will frown upon the 2 inch chicken wire but I have never seen any "predators" here in the neighborhood. My doxies are pretty good at alerting us to any mischeif going on. Not only that but hardware cloth is as high as a giraffe'$ butt!

Thanks. I've found some things i wish i would've done different...should've put linoleum (sp?) down before i built the walls. ohhh yeah, and I'll never use those poulty fence staples that you have nail in with a hammer. Only hit my thumb once...but it was a doosie! Probably lose the nail... Hoping for a slow day at the firehouse tomorrow:fl. Coop building is tough work!

Got a little work done on the coop today. Got the run door built and installed. i went by the lumber place to buy a screen door but none were gonna fit my needs. on my way out of the parking lot i see a stack of pallets and asked if they minded if I took one...No problem. I took one that was about 16 ft. long made of nice white 1x4's. Pryed off a couple of boards and... Viola! FREE DOOR!
