Gosh you have built a lovely pen and have very lucky chickens!

So sorry to hear of the loss due to dogs, but Dachshunds are prey-filled little darlings, hunting dogs at heart, and much tougher than most people know. A friend of mine lost two of her Schipperkes (a breed of dog) on two different occassions to her dachshunds! They just flat gutted and killed the other dogs. I grew up with a mini dachshund and adore them; look on th ebright side, at least with your breed (dachshunds) it didn't make the nightly news headlines! (saracastic reference to the fact anything my breed does (pit bulls) that other dogs do makes national news)

Hope your new hen fits in well, she is beautiful!

We were contemplating Anne Rice...

Very nice job, thanks for sharing the pics and storyline. I am sorry as well about your losses but that is the cycle that we sometimes share in this hobby....

Here's a little update from the Circle P farm

... First time for me to see a molt. Dumplin' is lookin' pretty pitiful these days. Her mood is even different. It seems like Noodle is molting too but it is not as near as severe as Dumplin'. There was a good strong wind blowing today. You could see the feathers flying off of her

We had our first freeze the other night and it got me thinking about heat for the coop. I got this idea from here on the BYC. Someone suggested setting a waterer on top of it to keep it from freezing. Having a fairly small coop (3x6), I though it might be enough to keep things a bit warmer. I could tell a noticeable difference last night when I checked on it. However, it wasn't very cold at all. We'll see.

Using a 60 watt bulb, light base, extension cord, terra cotta pot.

I tend to get crazy with the DE and poultry dust!

Yesterday I covered the vents at the top of the coop with "Visqueen" in the hopes that the terra-cotta heater would provide enough heat. It got down to freezing last night (waterer frozen). This morning I went out to check the coop, the girls were already out, and I placed my hand into the chicken door and could immediately tell a difference in temperature. I'm gonna try to get to the store and grab a couple of thermometers so i can provide some numbers. I'm still a bit worried about putting a 100 watt bulb in. Gonna stick with the 60 watt for now.

that's a clever idea with the pot for the water heater...also sorry to hear about your first girls...you learn quickly with chickens...everything will eat them so you have to make sure they are secure whatever you do with them. Also I only use hard wire cloth and not chicken wire as rats can get in and coons can reach in and pull your chickens through and eat their heads off...just saying!

But your coop is awesome.
