My dog won't eat my chickens!

I have been known to brag about the fact that my Black Lab Ziggy is such a good protector of the flock. I didn't really have to train him. I just said no when he made any aggressive moves toward my birds and he caught on to the idea that the chickens are under his protection. One of the last times I butchered I threw Ziggy a little piece of raw chicken and he turned it down. I was pretty impressed, but not nearly as impressed as I was today.
Today I butchered a few roosters that I killed the other day and I brought them straight in the kitchen and threw them in the crock pot! When we were eating, my son threw Ziggy a bit of cooked chicken and he absolutely refused to eat it. The only explanation I can think of is that he really understands that it was one of our backyard chickens on the plate!

That's great, especially since he's a lab. Mine aren't bird dogs, but I worry about them associating the chickens with food. So I don't feed them raw chicken, and I don't allow them outside while I'm butchering. I want a yard where the dogs can run around free with the birds... and we have it so far.

That is awesome that he will not mess with your chickens! He is a beautiful dog. We have 2 miniature long haired dachshunds and unfortunately they are not as obedient or smart as labs so they have a run that they will be confined to because they chicks will have free range of the back yard when it comes time for them to go outside!

You have a black lab named Ziggy too? I used to own a black lab named Ziggy. She was an amazing dog. We had her for 14 years until she developed a brain tumor and we had no choice but to put her down.

Its been almost 4 years since we lost her but it still brings tears to my eyes. Our Ziggy was actually a mix of some sort, but black lab nontheless.

Here is a picture of Ziggy.

Glad to hear that your dog gets along with the chickens so well. One of my current dogs (Zoey) is also very protective of our birds. Though she never refuses to eat cooked chicken.

Take Care Now.

I have a four month old black lab mix. She's mostly lab though. I've mostly taught her not to chase the chickens, but those darn tail feathers are just sooooo irresistible. She usually only chases them when I'm not outside. When I am she just kinds walks after them. Enough to make them squawk and run but "not enough to be, punishable... Right? I'm not in trouble... You didn't notice". "Yes, Maggie, I did." "Oh, man!" :( That's kinda how it goes.

Our Golden Retriever, "Lilly", lets the chickens walk right over the top of her.

She'll eat cooked chicken but we tried to give her some of the leftovers of a roo we processed and she wouldn't touch them.

Unfortunately, we didn't get her fixed and my boys let her hook up with a Chocolate Lab. ARG!!

Puppies due February 26th. I hope she doesn't have more than 2 or 3... .and then we have to find them homes and get them vaccinated etc, etc... I hate it. I'll be getting her FIXED before the year is out!

And then, she is getting spayed! We thought she was a lot younger than she was...

(I don't know if it's just me being overly sensitive because of some jackwagons at the animal shelter we got our dog from or if it really did come across this way, but I only underlined "spayed" to emphasize it. Not to correct your use of "Fixed"... I said "fixed" around the people at the animal shelter and they were like "Yes, she's getting altered" Like saying "fixed" would hurt Maggies feelings...)

Mahonri, vets can destroy/abort the litter at certain ages. Some shelters and groups will help one out financially in that manner for unwanted litters. Realize it is a touchy subject for some, but it is an option if desired. So is keeping them and rehoming them of course.

Delmar, that is a delightful tale! He looks very serious about his duties as flockwatcher in your photo!
