Hi all, I have a little chick that I got from a hatchery (Ideal) that is supposed to be a pullet. However, her feathers are almost all coming in black! Plus she is feathering in much slower than her hatchmate and she struts it like a roo!

I snapped this pic this morning and I can hear the old rock song by Ratt playing in my mind everytime I look at it:

He's so good lookin' and that's a fact
Steel guitar slung across his back
the chicks all know he's way cool junior.

Here's another pic from the top:

This is her hatch mate who certainly looks like a little lady:

and one more of the two of them:

Someone please tell me that calling this chick "her" in bold letters is making her a very uniquely colored pullet for her breed and that the Ratt song is just me spending too much time out in the heat.

Thanks for taking the time to look!

that chick looks almost identical to Sneezy and very similar to my poor little Stella and I am told that they are pullets. From what I have picked up on this site, sometimes hatchery SF pullets can have a lot of black in their feathers. Sneezy is twice the size of my similarly aged SF's too so I was really thinking roo but I'm being told not. This is Sneezy. Her red eyes are part of the infection we have been battling.

I went and read little Sneezy's story. I think considering all she's been through that poor little thing looks great! You are doing a fabulous job with her.

And, you're right, they do look alot alike. That gives me hope that mine is a girl after all. I know the hatchery isn't usually wrong, but I also know mistakes can happen and with all that black I just have my doubts. I guess whenever they crow or lay an egg we'll know for sure one way or another.

I posted a link to our pics in the Faverolles thread hoping that some of the breeders will chime in. Someone seems to think they are Roos. That really stinks for me because my little sick Stella looks pretty much like them just smaller. Which means 2 possibly 3 of my remaining 4 might be roos.

Thanks for your words of encouragement about Sneezy. We really have had a rough go of it. They are fighting really hard.

Well, I wanted a roo, but not two or three. Thank you for you input. I do appreciate it. I wouldn't be nearly so irritated if I had used a hatchery but I went to a breeder because that usually means better quality. I can only keep a small number of birds and two roos is really not something that I need to try and do. I have busted my rear end to save both of them and because they had respiratory infections when I bought them, I have to be responsible and assume that they are carriers and can not rehome them. All that work keeping my little pets alive just so I can cull one...WOW.

You have had a terrible time with this whole ordeal - I just posted a response on the Faverolles thread, but yes, I think roo.... I have a handful of them too....

I had a hatchery SF "pullet" that feathered in almost all black. Folks on BYC judged it to be a boy, turned out to be a girl (per the person I gave it to). So ya never know with the hatchery birds. :p But with real SF, black generally means boyo. =(
