I have been treating a duck ith a foot sore for several days and I still am not sure what it is. There was a black scab topping a large swelling on top of her foot. She limped and hopped badly. So, several people on here said to treat it as bumblefoot. I applied triple antibiotic cream several times a day for several days now. The scab loosened and came off but did not reveal an open pus-filled or "cheesy" center. So, today I decided to explore it a bit and when I poked it with a scalpel it just bled a bit. It acts and feels like it is fluid filled like a blister. Should I keep digging at it? The curious thing is it is on top of her foot.

Has it gotten any smaller?

I am wondering out loud if it could be fungal, not bacterial.

How about trying Epsom salts compresses to see if that draws anything out?

This is a runner duck. The lump has not gotten any smaller. The toe to the tip was all swollen a little and that may be a bit smaller. How do I do the compresses. I will try almost anything!

Making a compress is easy. The hard part is holding on the duck's foot for five minutes.

In a small clean bowl put two or three tablespoons of Epsom salts. Add about a quarter to a half cup of lukewarm water.

Using a very clean rag, or child's washcloth, even a couple of folded paper towels, soak the material in the Es water.

For the next part, you may need help.

Hold the duck up (I like to squat or sit down so the duck is not high in the air) and wrap the fabric around the whole foot, and try to keep the foot in the bowl. It is more important to be gentle than keep the foot in the bowl. If you can keep it in there, great. The fabric holds the solution that needs to be in contact with the foot. Sometimes a duck will start to squirm so much that three minutes is all we can do, so I call it good.

Unwrap the foot, make sure there is not a gob of Epsom salts on the foot that the duck can eat (it's a laxative), and you are done.

Okay, I will try this. She lets me hold her pretty well so I should be able to. How often do you recommend I do this? And, is this considered a treatment specifically for fungus or just generally good for sores?

Ooooh, good thread, I had the same questions, running! Hope someone who has done this pops in & replies!!

I did it twice a day with Romy till I the swelling was significantly reduced, then once a day. I followed it with antibiotic ointment. Epsom salts is supposed to draw stuff out, even tiny splinters.

Regarding the possibility of fungal infection, I would think something like Monistat might be helpful, but that is a slightly educated guess.

i have a hen that had bumblefoot last fall.i soaked her foot in epsom salts.and applied some salve that our local vet gave me.the black scab went from the pad of her foot,to the top.it finally came off.now she has it in her other foot.here on byc i had read were their was a product that you treat koi(fish) for lesions.and that was suppose to cure bumblefoot.without doing any surgery.i found the product on the web.for seven days i soaked her foot in this solution.it did not help her at all.so back to the epsom salt foot soaks.i'am going to mix borax powder with vaseline as a salve read that it works.good luck.

I am going to try the Epsom salt compresses for a few days. I did order some Monistat cream also. Somewhere I read Blu-cote may help if it is fungal. Has anyone heard or tried it on a duck? Our local vets aren't too involved with poultry so I am on my own......
