I only have 3 chickens & I have spent a lot of money trying to help them. Two of my hens have an entrenched case of CRD (They had it already when I bought them last year, though I wasn't aware) & my rooster has caught it from them.

I only have these 3 chickens & I have been doing all I can & have spent a lot of money caring for them (Baytril, other meds, VetRX, Oxine, supplements, health foods).

I cringe when I look at having to spend $50 to try Denagard, but I've heard excellent things about it. Meds I've used thus far have triggered shifting from one health problem to another (as various antibiotics leave them vulnerable to other problems flaring). One of my hens is particularly struggling right now with gurgly breathing. She needs some real help.

I'm thinking you get enough Denagard in the bottle or package to treat well over 100 chickens.
I'm wondering if anyone who has bought Denagard may have a little left they'd be willing to sell me?
(Note: If in liquid form, I don't know if there are restrictions on shipping a liquid like that--I'll check.) I could pay up to $22 total for medicine & shipping.

I know sometimes it can be best to put chickens down with health problems like this, but they are in good body condition & generally seem happy. I have been through A LOT to have them & want them to be able to live & be quite healthy if possible.

I know this is asking a big favor to go through the bother of packaging & going to the Post Office, but it would mean a lot if it could help Hannah.

Anyone?

Thank you very much for caring & sending an idea.

I've heard Tylan is one of the more effective CRD meds in a lot of cases.

I did try Gallmycin & later Tylan, but neither helped my chickens' cases. It seems the strains of disease they have is resistant to that class of meds (Macrolides).

Denagard seems one of the few meds I haven't tried that may be really helpful.

Aminoglycides (such as Lincomycin-Spectinomycin & Neomycin) are another med class I haven't tried, but I think they have a narrower spectrum of effectiveness & I'm hoping to avoid trying out too many more meds.

Denegard seems to have the highest likelihood of being effective.

I hadn't even heard of Denegard... I would share if I had some - I know how frustrating it can be dealing with illness and the feeling of helplessness that can come with it. And I know that especially when you just have a few birds, you become really attached. It may sound a bit impossible, but have you considered posting on your local CL to see if anyone keeps that product on hand? I'm sure someone local would give or sell you just a few doses if they saw your message...

Wow--Craigslist! A local want ad may indeed be good. There is also a HUGE local classifieds section here in Utah on the website ksl.com ( http://www.ksl.com/?nid=47 ) with a big section of Poultry ads, so I could try posting there, too.

Thanks for brainstorming suggestions, & for your empathy. It can indeed be hard with this kind of struggle sometimes. It sounds like you understand.

I already tried contacting a local friend who runs a hatchery, but haven't had success yet.

Hooray! -- Utah BYCer Cynthia12 saw my ad on ksl.com & called & offered me some of the Denagard she had. I got to meet her (It's always good talking with other chicken people!) & now have enough Denagard to treat my 3 chickens.

THANK YOU, CYNTHIA, THANK YOU!!!

Thanks for asking

The hens, Hannah & Gracie, look good, as does the rooster, Pioneer. The 3 of them have been continuing to shake their heads, though so far today it seems somewhat less. I'll keep watching progress.

Since the head shaking has continued showing up a lot of the time despite even while taking various good respiratory meds that help with other symptoms, I'm starting to wonder if there is a non-mucus related issue that may be causing their head shaking. But I can't guess what?? I've looked in their ears for mites or infection, but haven't seen anything.

I've been giving Duramycin in the drinking water, along with the Denagard, because I've read that Tiamulin (Denagard) synergizes with Tetracycline meds to increase the effectiveness of both, & because tetracyclines may help prevent some E. coli from developing in the aftermath of a strong med like Denagard.
-------------------------------------
While waiting to hopefully find someone who would sell me some Denegard, I found out the dose I'd previously given of my Tylan 50 (0.4 cc) was actually the dose for Tylan 200 (which is a more concentrated tylosin). So I decided to try Hannah at a higher dose.
I also learned that Tylosin & Tetracyclines are also supposed to synergize to increase the effectiveness of both meds. So I gave LA-200 (oxytetracycline) orally & subcutaneously along with the Tylan 50.

Note: I strongly recommend trying to get Tylan 200 instead of Tylan 50 when treating a chicken. The full dose of Tylan 50 is 1.6 cc per day, & it is hard to get that much medicine into one chicken, particularly since Tylan is a med that can cause some damage in breast muscles when injected there, & I've heard one person say that a knowledgeable vet told them that injectible Tylosin may cause throat damage.

Hannah's breathing improved some with the higher doses of Tylan (though I didn't give her a full 1.6 cc each day) & concurrent Oxytetracycline.
-------------------------------------
I waited a number of days before starting the Denagard, giving her system a break. Her breathing seems to be getting much better now that she's on Denagard. I'll keep you updated!

thanks for sharing- on the head shaking, wonder if ear mites could be the issue? i did have a red star that did that alot- never did figure out with her what it was about- i have a friend that used denagard for a week, then a week off, then another week to eradicate CRD, which might be what i will have to do with my pullets- annoying, but i have seen some wonderful results with denagard - i just started using it on a roo with laryngitis, and it cleared it up when tylan didn't.... each case is a bit different though
