Curious Incubation Method

I've been wondering the same thing. I'm looking for a cost effective method to help my daughter with hatching chicks.

I can't think of why it wouldn't, I'm just thinking based on the designs i have been researching, safety fo the chicks might be an issue since there is nothing blocking the chicks from jumping into the heating elements.

I don't know if it will be a good idea to leave a toaster oven on continuously for 21+ days. There are some cheap, easy incubator designs floating around here. Why don't you type in "home build incubator" in the advanced search bar and see what you find.
 
Well i tried the home made cooler incubator but seem to not be able to keep constant temp. My wife said we had a toaster oven that is pretty new and she dont use it. I am testing it now. I put water in the drip pan on the bottom rack and have thermometer on the top rack where eggs go. If i can get constant temp of 100 then it should work. I will put some wire in there to help protect the chicks once born. But once they hatch i can get them out and put them in my brooding box. It all sounds easy but we know how that goes at times. LOL
 
well the temp is steady at 99 degrees with humidity at around 40%. It been steady all day so I put in a dozen eggs and started incubating. After I put the eggs in the temp went down to 93 but is climbing back up like it should be. The due date should be January 2, 2013. Wouldnt it be awesome if at least 1 hatched early and be born on the 1st. LOL I will keep this thread updated as time goes.
 
This sounds rather interesting. I'll be stalking to see how it plays out.

Here is a few pics of my set up. So far its working out great. As you can see the temp is 100 degrees and the humidity is 32%. I would like to get the humidity up little more it seems to go back and fourth between 32% and 35%. Welcome to any comments or suggestions. Thanks.




 
Your humidity is actually perfect for the 1st 18 days. It can drop as low as 25 & still be fine. You don't want to let it get above 40 until lockdown. Once you are ready for lockdown at day 18, add wet sponges to raise humidity closer to 50. The goal is 45-65 for hatchday.
