On 7/1/13, one of my chicks hatched with a growth on the back of its head/neck. I left the chick in the incubator and then placed it in its own chick nursery to get strong before introducing him to the other chicks. I thought that the other chicks may peck at the growth or possible kill him, but this morning I found the chick still alive and well. The chick is able to eat, drink and move around without difficulty, even with the growth. My questions are: what is this growth? Will it kill the chick? Should I do anything g or just let the chick be? Please reply with help and suggestions.

Thank you.

Hi!!

I've never seen anything like that!! Is it moving around, and eating and drinking well? This would probably get more answers If you posted in the Emergencies forum.

That's one for Ripley's Believe it or Not. I've never seen or heard of anything like that. Don't mean to joke about it. You can see it's filled with blood vessels so would bleed badly if injured. I would wonder if a vet could remove it without killing the chick? It's a darling chick but, I would imagine it would grow larger as grows.

I've posted this on emergencies, but no one has an answer. The chick is acting and looking normal, other than the huge growth on its head. My plan is to let it love until I see signs of distress or discomfort. I can't afford to have the growth removed. I am not being selfish, but I am sure that comes with a pricey bill. I am hoping he can make it. Only time will tell unless someone has an answer.

Good news- the chicks growth just burst. It was filled with clear fluid. The chick is still standing and does not seem to be in pain. I moved him to his own chick nursery because I saw another chick go after the extra flap of skin that is now hanging from the back of his neck. I will leave him separated for the remainder of the day. I hope that he makes it!!

Glad to hear the is doing ok. Keep us posted I would love to hear how he/she progresses. BTW, your Pom looks exactly like mine. And mine does LOVE his chickens!

I would keep her separated so the other chicks don't hurt her until it heals. Is she still moving around OK and eating and everything? Weird!! I'm glad she's doing better!

Yes, she is eating and drinking, but she is chirping very loud to be with her siblings. I put her in but one went straight for her extra flap of skin, so I took her back out.
