Giving antibiotics to "carrier birds" of CRD?

I started a thread below but have new questions. I suspect our 2 new chickens carried CRD into our small flock. Our previous birds are getting sick but the new (suspected carrier) birds seem happy and healthy.

Since I am giving Liquamycin to the sickly birds, should I even bother giving it to the carrier birds too, since they seem healthy? They've had 2 doses already (was just thinking I needed to dose them all) but after further contemplation, I don't know if it will help or hinder.

Care to share your thoughts?

Personally I wouldn't treat the birds who didn't have symptoms, unless the birds were all together, then it would be easiest to treat all with meds in the water. But Liquamycin is a shot right, so I would just treat sick ones. This is very common for birds showing no symptoms coming into a flock, but being carriers from being exposed or having the diseases in the past. That is why it is always best to quarantine new birds for at least a month, and even then they may not show symptoms. These birds can be immune, but still be carriers.

One question I have, is that when you bring new birds in and quarantine them, if they are carriers only, showing no symptoms, you still won't know until they infect your other birds, right? Just wondering if there is any way to know up front if a bird is a carrier.

When you get new birds, always quarantine them for at least 6 weeks as far away from your existing flock as possible. There are respiratory diseases that have longer incubation times than other respiratory diseases. You dont know if newly acquired birds are carriers or not when you first get them. The only way to tell for sure is to have bloodwork done or necropsy performed at a lab. I'm sure you dont want to do that and neither does anyone else. While birds are in quarantine, any disease that a bird might have will show itself due to the stress of a new environment, stress from the move, stress from being caged, stress in general etc...THEN you will see physical symptoms ie; runny nostrils, sneezing, wheezing, gurgling, bubbles in eyes, facial swelling and so on. It is then you should decide to treat or cull the birds.
