Chickens won't eat roasted soybeans?

We recently tried switching our chickens from a prepared chicken food to a recipe including roasted soybeans. Our co-op ordered us roasted soybeans and our chickens will not touch them and these are birds that will eat anything.

In researching, there is much mention of roasted soybeans smelling and tasting good, maybe nutty. The ones we bought have little oder and flavor. And they certainly don't taste like roasted soybeans made for humans that I've tried, these have a waxy texture in your mouth. They seem to be about 30% cracked soybeans and 70% hulls and stems.

If I doctor the beans up with household flavors they will eat them just a bit.

This is our first experience with roasted soybeans and I don't know what I'm looking for. I don't know if this is simply something new that they have to develop a taste for or I purchased the wrong or bad product? The label says Roasted Soybeans, 38% protein, 20% fat and is from a big animal supply company in Wisconsin.
 
You'll probably have to grind them up.

I've been sprouting grains, seeds and winter peas for my chickens. They leave the peas and buckwheat till everything else is gone.
 
I just throw them down like scratch and they get cleaned up. You shouldn't have much chaff and hulls. That's junk. The bag was probably from the end of the run. I would exchange it if it's bad.
 
I wanted to add pics of the roasted soybeans I purchased to see what others think. After two month of forcing them on our birds we're having to switch to a commercial food because of low protein issues.

Everyone I've talked to says that their chickens love roasted soybeans and our chickens have almost no interest in these. Even doctored up with milk, sugar and other items they will gobble up the skins (guessing that is the thin curled stuff after looking at parts of a bean on the internet), leaves and stems but leave the bean halves.

When I ate a couple of the halves, they were waxy, stuck a bit to my teeth and had almost no flavor.

I'm looking for more knowledge so that I can successfully return the 500 pounds that I paid a premium price for.



 
Somebody out there should know what roasted soybeans look like? I need some knowledge so I can return them if they are poor quality.
 
Here is the reply I just received from the company who's tag was on the bags of beans.

"Yesterday I was able to get an update on your concerns. I was told that the soybeans this year did have a poor crop. With the product being 2+ months old there was nothing we can do at this point. It was suggested to possibly break down the product more and mix with another feed to see if that helps. I did find out that if the beans were stored anywhere they might have gotten warm could be another factor. They easily get rancid."

How would I know if the beans are rancid? They don't smell bad just sort of a light grain/feed smell.
