I have a 50lb bag of Purina game bird chow - it says growth and plumage on the bottom of the bag. From what I can tell this is the "Purina Startena" feed and it is supposedly 30% protein....

From what I have read this is too high of protein for older birds.... Do I need to go buy a bag of Purina Layena to feed the older birds? Or will this feed be fine? I thought the only difference was crumbles vs pellets... but as I read on the bag there are different protein values for each....

What do yall say?

When laying hens get that much protein they begin to develop larger yolks. I left on vacation once and my bird sitter got the starter and layer formulas mixed up. Upon my return I had to put down two of my hens who already were laying dangerously large eggs but had suffered blow-outs from trying to pass even larger ones developed on the high protein starter. So I caution against it.

I feed my meat birds starter from day one to day dead but everyone else I take off of the starter at 6-8 weeks.
