Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

well "lock down" is day 18 thru hatch....the mama hens will not get off the nest in order to keep the eggs moist and warm. so during artificial incubation someone made up a rule that on day 18 you no longer open the incubator....it's really to keep newbies from over zealously candling and fiddling with the eggs causing them to dry out....

that all being said...it's a good rule...if you don't know what your looking at, what's normal or abnormal, it's best to leave the hatching eggs be.

especially once they externally pip please refrain from opening the bator....if that inner membrane dries it is just awful for the chick!! add a blob of wet paper towel quickly if you need the humidity higher:old

Thanks so much for the info. I see that some do lockdown at day 18 and other folks do it at day 19 or when they see the internal pip. Either way seems to be OK. I will make sure to NOT open the incubator during lockdown. This is why I bought the Brinsea Octagon 20 for hatching only 9 eggs, so they would have lots of room to hatch, and more enjoyment for me to watch! I had the smaller Mini Advance for my first hatch and didn't enjoy watching the crowded hatch and they could barely stand up in it.

This board is the greatest!:thumbsup

Max is getting excited and nervous. He wants to know what everyone thinks of his outfit? Too much?

I go into lockdown on Sunday and I'm really worried because one of my eggs has a very small air sac. I only started with 3 eggs and 1 was an early quitter so I want both of these to hatch. Does anyone have an idea what the chances are that my baby will survive? Is there anything I can do to help? :hit

Question about when and what to look for an internal pip? I am on day 16. I have seen some comments about not locking down on day 18 unless you see internal pips. Any hints would be great! I do have a nice Brinsea Ovascope so. I can see really well inside the eggs.
Thanks.

Normally, lock down is always on day 18. Just lock down. I used to lock down on day 19. Didn't make a difference either way. They come when they want to. I've had them pip and hatch right on the day that I've lock down on day 18. Guess the chick was ready. :)

4 little EE's are hatched. Actually, I do believe I have a couple of Olive Eggers in there. The eggs were already a pretty olive color, then there was the blue. I am hoping the chick that came from that egg, is a girl. Real pretty blue egg. Black chick.
