Then last friday a friend posted on facebook "free chickens"! I had thought about buying some chicks this spring, but I didn't have time to build a coop. Well, this past weekend I did. So now I have a coop and 6 half bandy half copper murans (or so I was told!) I'm already thinking about getting more to add a variety of color to my flock and eggs.

Below are pictures of my unfinished coop that I took this past weekend. After spending quite a bit of time lurking here, I have already cut 5 foot wide by 18 inch tall window (which they love!) on the front wall for ventiliation. Any tips/advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Also, if anyone knows where a person can get chickens in southeast Texas that would be great as well!

THANKS!

A picture is worth a bazillion words...and this one seems to have had the psychic effect of a RedBull, on me anyway! I am simultaneously inventorying my power v. hand tools as I write this! Thanks for the inspiration.
( Looks excellent, congratulations! )

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

What a cute coop! Kelsie has left you with the link to find your state thread.

Great to have you aboard and enjoy this new adventure you are on!

Welcome to BYC! Your coop and run look great, but I would suggest covering the chicken wire in hardware cloth. There are just too many predators that can tear through chicken wire (coons, possums, foxes, etc) or pass through the openings in the mesh (weasels, minks, snakes, rats, etc.). I know it adds some extra expense, but it's cheaper than replacing your flock. As for getting chickens, Ideal Poultry in Cameron, TX, (http://idealpoultry.com/) is a huge hatchery that sells almost every breed imaginable. I don't know how far it is from where you live, but having been raised in Texas myself, I know how great the distances can be from one place to another. Ideal Poultry also ships chicks if you don't mind mail order. I have ordered chicks from them on several occasions (from as far away as Hawaii) and have been satisfied with their service and birds. Good luck.
