This is my first time having Barred Rocks, and I'm pretty sure this one (on the left) is male. but I wanted to ask around to see if my suspicions are correct. He looks more white than the others, and the pronounced comb I feel is a giveaway. Thoughts?
I'm happy either way, but I'm hoping its a roo
I have an indoor/outdoor cockerel about 20-22 weeks old (guesstimate). He’s lively and very active. Last night, the back of his comb and the very tips of the top of the last few little spikes looked slightly purple and almost… deadening. I gave him water in case he was dehydrated and since I...
Have about 8 cockerels for give away. Dad is a Copper Marans and very gentle. He is a bit henplucked, LOL. Moms are also well dispositioned.... Salmon Faverolle, Barred Rock, Light Ameraucana, and Dark Ameraucana. Believe the gray chick to be the Light Ameraucana cross. Both Salmon Faverolle...
He’s between 18-20 weeks and is going through a big molt. This molt is bringing in both really pretty brown feathers as well as feathers that flip backwards. Is this standard? Is there such thing as a mixed chicken breed? (I’m obviously new.) I’ll attach photos.
Hi everyone! I was wondering if someone had any insights into this issue: my rooster Curry is the sweetest chicken ever because we hand raised him and he loves cuddles just like a little puppy, but today one of our 6 month old hens laid her first egg and he was suddenly SUPER aggressive and...
Hey there, new BYC member (Jenny) here. I’ve joined this website because I often have a few queries regarding my chickens. I’ve got six hens and a hybrid cockerel:). I’m fairly new to owning a rooster, he’s just under a year old.
Spent all day at my local fair, and here was my favorite moment. I hope it makes you laugh too! :lau
A couple walked up to me and asked, "Is that bird a rooster or chicken?"
I checked the tag on the cage. "This is a rooster. But a chicken can be both a male and female chicken. We call the girls...
Is my daughters Easter egger a roo?! We bought 2 along with a welsummer and a orpington(which I think is actually a barred rock due to its speckles) from our local feed store, all were said to be sexed females. But one Easter eggers comb is a lot bigger than all the others. Both Easter eggs are...
Okay so this morning I was shocked at a sound I haven’t heard for months since my other cockerel died.
Crowing.
yup, Easter has started to crow. And just asking, but can you train a roster to not crow? Not because it’s annoying, but because we are in town and if people here u, well…..yeah...
We have 2 chickens that I was convinced were both pullets but now that they are 19 weeks old, one has started to act a bit roosterish and the other one looks somewhat roosterish.😩 I already have 2 Roos that were meant to be hens (I’m deciding who has to go right now) but now I’m afraid Bellatrix...
Hello, y'all! I got a flock of 10 on April 15th this year. I have no idea what my 3 "Golden Girls" are, but my brother thinks NH Reds, I got 4 Easter Eggers, 2 Sapphire Gems, and this random lil beastie that was sold as a Sapphire Gem pullet and turned out to be a who-knows-what cockerel. He's...
Hello, everybody! I'm new, to both the BYC and to chicken keeping. In April this year my family thought it would be fun to get some lil chickies, but now the responsibility is solely mine to care for them, so I'm in need of a little help.
We were surprised to find 3 cockerels in with our batch...
I have a 12 week old silkie cockerel. I sadly have to rehome him becouse of the loud crowing at early morning hours. But I saw what I thought was him breeding (or him thinking he was breeding) an adult silkie hen. He started crowing at 8 weeks old. I don't have any other roosters at the moment...
Hello! In May we got 6 chicks, two of which I think were a week or two old and the other four only a few days. They were all supposed to be female and are all different breeds but we’re starting to wonder if our Australorp is actually a male. (S)he is one of the older ones, so about 12 weeks...
Howdy! First time chicken lady here, I’ve got a small flock of 5 that are 6 weeks old I believe. I know for sure one is a roo (not pictured) but I’m wondering about my other 4. I also need some breed help with numbers 1 & 4, number 1 is supposedly a Olive Egger and number 4 is supposed to be a...
Darcy and Wanda: Starlight green eggers, around 7-8 weeks. Darcy might be questionable?
Phoebe: Unsure on breed, around 4-5 weeks - possibly Easter egger? The lady said she had ameraucanas and Wyandottes and some mixes, so I’m guessing Phoebe is a mix… I’ve read about the triple comb meaning...
Hi y’all, I wanted to get everyone thoughts on these two babies. I asked way to early in the game 🥴 rookie move. Here are the feathered babies now
