Is it too hot for my hens to lay?

I have had chickens off and on most of my life and I am 58 yrs old so a little perplexed. Right now I have 2 Dark Brahmans 7 mo mo old, 2 Self Blue Cochins 6 1/2 mo old and 2 Brabanter 6 mo old (all hens no roosters). I feed a high quality feed for multi flock, fresh greens, fresh water and...

    Location for a New Coop

Hi All, I promised the kids I'd build them a chicken coop for chickens next spring so I'm in research phase. My plan is a coop/run combo with a footprint of 6x12. The coop itself will be 24 square feet. There is really only one location in my yard that is easily accessible - it is on the west...

    Cochin stopped laying! Too hot?

Hello all! I have a Partridge Cochin, just shy of a year old! She was a good layer through her first winter and spring; smallish brown eggs but very consistent; always 6 or 7 a week. She did go broody in May and stopped laying, but we were able to isolate her and snap her out of it pretty...

Broody won't sit on her egg. . .will it die in the shell?

My hen Sadie is sitting on one egg. I've candled it and it is developing. . .or was. It's been 105 degrees to 107 degrees daily. The past week she is in the nest, but will not sit on the egg. She stands over it! It's just too hot! Will this kill the chick in the egg? Or will the high...

Help! Heat and seizure Cornish cross

One of my rooster Cornish cross just seizured and died in my arms. From noticing when he wasn’t moving much to getting him in his own box with food and water to when he died was less than five minutes. Could the heat have killed him? All my chickens have water, shade, and food. He was panting...

It’s hot, electrolytes for how long?

I live in Arizona and we’ve been trying to keep our chickens cool with tarps, misters and now electrolytes. I read that you are not supposed to give them electrolytes long term due to the salt. What else should I give them to help them out? They seem to really like the electrolyte though.

hello all! so we live in southern ontario and it is our first very hot day this year. well anyways, one of my 11 month old columbian rocks is acting very strange today. Can they go outside?

Our “Hen House” used to be our doggie house and we insulated it, added a heat lamp and also put in hay for when she wanted to be outside and it was snowing. We have converted it into our coop now. The heating lamp is very safe and out of the way so nothing can hopefully mess with it and it cause...

Making sure my brooder box is okay

Hi all! I want to start off by saying this is my first time raising chicks in over 10 years, and I’m pretty rusty. The chicks seem to be doing pretty good, sleeping a lot, fluffing bedding, and chirping. No water drinking yet, but they have investigated it and been shown. There’s six bantam...

Keep eggs warm during night for several hours?? Help!

I need help, I made a homemade incubator from some videos I saw online. But the main heat source is a lightbulb. Every night I turn it off because I don’t want it to overheat or to make the eggs too hot. But, when I wake up in the morning the eggs are about 70 degrees. What can I do to keep the...

    3 questions!

    1. 46/89 of my shipped eggs have detached air cells.. I put them into the incubator in cardboard cartons with holes in the bottom (don’t have a turner) pointy end down. Any chance they’ll reattach..? Should I wait a few days to turn (well, till) rather than 1 day? 2. One of my incubators went...

MOVE to the barn. Advice Please.

I currently have a mixture of baby ducklings and chicks who are now 3 weeks old. Chicks are more feathered than the ducks. I live in Oley, PA (between reading and Philadelphia areas). They are currently housed in my guest house bathroom. Heatlamp was removed one week ago in exchange for a...

How cold is too cold for the coop?

For those of us who measure temperatures INSIDE the coop, do you have a "goal minimum temp" for the winter? While many factors influence the necessity of heating a coop (range of outdoor temp, size of flock and coop, breed/health/age of bird, coop insulation etc.), it seems that complicated...

    Cold weather for pullets

Hello, So, I got nine baby chicks. They were hatched on Dec. 2. I have a broader set up in my heated garage and they're doing great. My question is about when I can safely move them to the coop. I had chickens for years and then stopped for a few years and now I'm starting again so I do know...

Can I keep Silkie Chicks that are almost 2 weeks apart together?

If you followed my other thread you know I had 2 white bantam silkies 12 days old today. Unfortunately after all my efforts one has passed away leaving my healthy chick very lonely. My breeder said she will replace the chick with some hatchlings she has that are black silkies. My questions is...
