Hey there -- In a little less than 2 months, I'll have 3 ducklings & 2 goslings arriving. While I'm beyond excited, I feel like I'm studying for the SATs all over again. I'm planning on building out their area behind my house, its spaced out to be around 50x60(ish) and is mostly tree-covered. My...
Hello everyone! My father and brother are constructing a beautiful chicken coop thats 4x4. How big should the chicken run be? We have 6 chicks that are growing too fast! Please let me know what you guys think.
We are newbie chicken owners that live in an urban area and are finishing up repairing, reinforcing, and painting a coop with attached run we bought off someone who had built it themselves. It’s quite sturdy and has a shingled roof over the whole thing (picture below in the previous owners yard...
I'm not handy, and have been pricing runs, and they are more than I want to spend. But, we have plenty of raccoons and foxes, so I must have security. I was thinking this dog kennel at Lowe's might work if I cover the bottom and lower walls (is 2' high enough?) with hardware cloth. Dimensions...
I’m new to raising chickens, but I’ve had a slew of odd animals throughout my life. I really enjoyed raising ducks as a teenager, and turkeys as a small child!
I currently have 4 girls, all about 2 weeks old, 2 golden comets, 1 Isa brown and one that I can’t remember 🤦♀️
I’m very excited to...
Hello all! Today me and my dad went to TSC to get some cat food and saw some chicks and ducklings for sale. I asked my dad if we can get them, but we don't have a coop as of now. My dad decided maybe next month we can go get some ducklings! We have a basic idea for the coop, it won't take that...
Hi :)
I have a question about chicken runs.
I have built an Avery coop (pictured) and have paved the bottom and will put concrete around to secure them. Is that going to be ok to keep out rats?
Also, for a run, do I need to lay wire on the floor as well as the sides? I was going to just put...
for my litter in the coop and run I was going to do sand but the quarry mixed a bunch of clay in with the fill sand. Is there any reason the clay could become an issue? I’m trying to be as frugal with this build as possible and don’t want to spend another 200+ on bedding so I’m hoping it will be...
Has anyone used an electric wire around their chicken coop?
We are building our coop and run now and we have many predators where we live. We live in northern Minnesota, and just recently we have had a 350-400lb black bear come to our front porch twice in search of bird seed. We take all our...
hey guys, I recently bought a dozen chicks and four keets to add to my flock. They were brooded indoors, but as it turns out, food and bedding is much more expensive when I’m the one paying for it, and after 6ish (maybe 8ish) weeks, my family was done with the noise and smell, thus marking the...
Hi, I am planning out my quail run. The dimensions are 5 feet x 10 feet x 2 feet. The reason being is that I need to be able to slide it under my porch during the snowy winter months, and I don't have the space for a taller, more permanent structure. During the summer, I won't be able to move...
I’m wanting to raise Serama. I have read about them online but would rather get more information from people that know about Chickens and Serama in general. Guess I just don’t believe everything I read on the internet. I live in Southwest Arkansas, so, for the most part, we don’t get very cold...
We are finally finishing our run this week. It will be about 6ft by 8ft. I want to put raised garden beds around it, hoping that the chickens cannpoked their head out and snack on herbs. I also want to use it as a trellis for watermelons and pumpkins to help with shading. Has anyone down this...
Well, it’s really happening:)
We have started the coop. Who knew painting would take so long?
The ground was much more sloped than we thought it was so we had to bring in soil to get it started and make the area.
more level.
We decided at that point to use cinder blocks as well to help...
Tomorrow my Papa is coming over to help me set up the fencing for my run. (He also built my coop for me because he is amazing. I plan on painting/decorating it and I will have to post pictures)
I need help on options for the flooring of the run. In post forums I have read all of the run floors...
Finished chicken run. Sides and top all covered in chicken wire with entire perimeter below ground lines in hardware cloth to prevent varmints from digging into the coop. It's been 2 years since this was completed and so far no problems. Yay!
I just wanted to share with everyone my current setup. I have 13 hens and 1 beautiful roo. I am in Central VA. I just completed a new coop (minus painting) that attaches to my old one for additional space for the girls. Most days they free range in the yard and are locked up at night...
Hello all BYC'ers!
Sorry for the length.. just wanted to give a bit of a set up....
Our flock currently free ranges in our backyard, but for a variety of reasons I'd like to provide them with another space so they aren't in the back yard as much messing it all up. We have a somewhat unique set...
Hi! I was wondering if I could solicit some of your expert opinions - we have 4 ~4 week old (hopefully) hens. We purchased from a local individual who makes them this coop with attached run. My father is going to help me add on to the run as we think due to high level of predators in our area...
