Update coop finished today. Except movinbg the heat lamp outside and nesting boxes the girls can move in. I picked up a 50 bulb string of christmas light so the ladies wont be in total darkness as this seems to bother them alot. The heat lamp will be plugged into the same "thermal cube" as the heater for the waterer. The Incadecent bulb will be on a timer to extend their daylight hours as needed.

Hi Everyone, I am brand new to this forum and new to hen keeping as well. (I hope my pictures post correctly!)

My coop sort of evolved over the months. We built a retaining wall with railroad ties to push back the hill to make a spot for the coop. Then we lazily put up a dog run from Home Depot. We added chicken wire to the bottom 2 feet of wall because the little chicks were able to escape! The dog run sits on the ground (decomposed granite, which is a fine gravel/sand). We cut a hole into the back of the dog run and attached a store-bought chicken coop with nest boxes. There are doors built into the side for grabbing the eggs. We put up some PVC over the dog run and stretched a tarp across for shade and rain protection. So far so good. We let the hens run around the yard several days per week. I rake out the droppings every 2 weeks or so. I also have a light out there to keep the hens laying. I recently swapped out the bulb with the heat lamp bulb because we had a few cold days. (We are in So. Calif.)

I am sort of making it up as I go along. I know my coop is makeshift. I wanted a pretty one but the cost was crazy and I am not that handy. The chickens don't seem to mind being in a dog run!

This forum is great! I am learning a lot! I love my chickens!! The RIRs are gorgeous, but we have a sweet spot for our little black silky. Still not sure of its gender!!

Welcome to BYC Ma. I am new also. At least you have your chickens and a coop. My babies won't arrive until March and my coop that was suppose to be built over the last two weekends keeps getting put on the back burner. Seems there is always an emergency. I guess once the babies arrive then the coop will become an emergency.
I have not been in a place to have chcikens for 20 years - I am so excited.
Hope you learn as much here as I have.

Here is my coop that my DH made for me. It is 8x8, the run is just temporary until the ground thaws out this spring there will be a bigger run.
