No, no, no, no, no. There probably isn't even static electricity in there. They haven't invented metals, glass, or any other inorganic material of the sort. They did find some metal ores while digging, but Red didn't know what do do with them and used them for construction of other things...like the sewers in question.

Although Birdnut and Chickie didn't agree, some level of realism was maintained during Red's Era.

Oh fantastic! What do they make in the factories?
No static electricity? Well, maybe they should make explosives in the factories then. Then you could invent metal after blasting the stuff out of the ground.
Sewers is a very practical use for aforementioned metals. Certainly necessary, unlike many of the metal articles in production today.
