Okay, I googled 'Gainsboro', and clicked a couple of links, and this is pretty much what I found:

Thomas Gainsboro was the only TRUE original landscape artist of the time period, and he was also one of its greatest portrait painter. Gainsboro applied himself very successfully to both branches of art, and once said that he preferred landscape and only painted portraits for a living. He was one of the painters that paints/painted as if by nature. His works have neither the solidity or the eclectic resourcefulness of Reynolds.
