Have you tried using marshmallows as bait? That way you don't catch kitties or small dogs with meat/peanut butter.

(I don't use live traps i use bridger dog/cat proof coon traps and for bait i have some raccoon lure that smells awful to me but really brings them in and i'll also use some candy half open since raccoons like shiny things as well)

(Meh. The men folk hunt. I kill frogs and squirrels and such. Not much into sitting in the bloomin cold to wait for a deer. I have never been coon hunting, but Dad used to.)
