Practice in grant writing is always good. In this particular case, though the benefits mainly come from how detailed and comprehensive the proposal has to be for NSF. It has to include condensed but detailed plans for your entire dissertation (budgets, timelines, methods, dealing with the unexpected, format for presentation of final results etc) as well as demonstrating a high level of knowledge for your subject matter. Basically, it forces you to think really really hard about what you are doing, how, and why. It is also peer reviewed so even if you don’t get the grant, you may get some useful feedback

sorry i wasn’t very talkative last night.....i’m soooooo sick from the heat!!! office temp was in the 90’s most of the day yesterday and the repair dude cancelled because of the rain!!! i chewed him out because they are forecasting afternoon rain for the next 2 weeks!!! He promised he would get it done today

No, his brain would've been intact.
It's not an open wound or any sort of trauma, he just developed (or didn't develop) this way in the womb.
Craniofacial clefts (including the very common cleft palate) are uncomfortable I'm sure, but generally not considered painful. ❤

It looks horrifying, but that sounds kind of interesting....

Poor little thing. I'm sad for it. I think I'd have probably shot it--(fastest method to end suffering, which I would have believed to be at least immanent). Hope they're not using it for, um, learning activities.

Tesa (the dog, aka the real Tes) did that once as a very small puppy. She just... walked into our lake and didn't stop swimming, never turned back. We thought surely she would turn around but no, not even when her head went underwater. I had to swim out in jeans and sneakers to save her from drowning.
She just turned 11 and she's still the stupidest and sweetest dog I've ever met. ❤

Roosters' testosterone causes their muscles to get lean and hard. Very sexy for the lady chickens; very tough on the teeth for us higher echelon carnivores.

That makes sense!! He was. Very late bloomer and only started crowing and mating at like 6 months old so maybe it might not be too bad yet? Or is that more than enough time to toughen up? They free range a lot too so he’s probably not fat or anything. Thinking your slow cooking suggestion may be best. But I don’t even know if I’m butchering him yet or not. It depends. It might be soon or it might be never it depends if he decides to try again, which he hasn’t yet. And if he ever makes contact, he’s going to be gone for sure.

Very fascinating! Wait... so I had a few that started crowing at like 4 months old and one was even producing fertile eggs that early and I had some like kinda crow? At 8 weeks, idk if those would be real crows, so does that mean the meat could get tough as early as 4 months or even 2?!

I always thought it was like over a year?
