Is this punishment for knowing what the Chicago Manual of Style is? :p

:lau

Why would she punish you for that!?

What? No, I don't need one.

I told you, I have e-mail for urgent things. Plus, most of my acquaintances are local, so I see them in person. Old fashioned, I'm sure.

They could do a lot more than I could. They would at least be armed.

Survival experts survive because they save their own butts instead of trying to help others. Be your own emergency contact!

They're not. Daily life hasn't magically become more urgent just because smart phones were invented. People can learn to take a chill pill and wait an hour for their problem to be resolved.

I don't work as a telemarketer, you goose. If I need to use a phone, I borrow one off somebody. People are always happy to share.

The walkie talkie was question was more for me... in case I needed to contact you :p

Even email seems slow to me lol there are much more instant ways. But I guess those are not necessary.

Nahhh I don’t think that’s old fashioned or old school or anything lol I always talk with my servers whenever I go in like Subway, Panera, etc. because I go there so much (or used to) that they all know me by now.... does that count? :lau  also chat with people I run into when out like old friends or whatever.

Tbh I would actually probably hang out with more in person/IRL friends and be online a lot less if I had any. :lau

Okay, that makes me sound like a total loser. :lau

I do have some but most of them are in other states and/or busy unfortunately. :(

But there are still some in the area, most of whom I haven’t talked to in forever, that I could/should probably make contact with again and start hanging out with haha

But I’m also just like really awkward/weird in person and get more nervous/shy so I like online/digital communication better haha

Gotta work on that I guess.

That’s true but you could distract the bear for me and lure it the other way!! Like bait! :lau

Hmmm... true. You can only really rely on yourself anyway and they do say if you want something done right, do it yourself. But even so, I am way too nice/kind and trusting. I would never survive in a survival scenario. I would want to help everyone. :lau

Hmm that’s true and I like that. My dad is bad about that. He’ll call a million times or be pounding on the door if it’s locked or call or whatever to open it and it’s like just chill. We’ll call back when we see it or like we hear you knocking, no need to call to tell us you’re out there lol

I myself am a bit inpatient sometimes. but not like that lol

:lau that’s true!! But I know my dad and SIL and everyone who works from home are usually always on conference calls or whatever haha

And I’m too shy I think to ask to borrow someone’s phone lol

Plus people are oddly private/protective of them these days and may not give it up lol

I might not. I’m weird about mine too haha

If Kdog had to write snail mail letters her friends would never get the letter because it would take a year to write it.

Then it would take the friend 5 years to read it.
:th

:lau :gig :lau

Believe it or not, I actually did used to write letters some. I just remembered this haha it was like in college. This band I had known for a few years and become pretty good friends with, we started writing back and forth. Did that for a while and then idk why but we eventually stopped. But it was fun while it lasted haha they were a small big, not ever big or anything, I don’t think they even ever toured or did shows, and it was just two of them, so I was able to get to know them better than I probably would have with a larger band. That was fun. I think they were from Texas actually haha but yes, I admit I wrote massive letters usually. :lau I usually tried to contain myself and shorten them. :lau I always hand wrote them too, felt more personal than typing, but it took forever and hurt my hands because of how much i had to say usually, so it was a compromise lol I don’t even know where the letters are anymore. I saved them all but I’d have to find them. I think they might be in a drawer upstairs. Or else I lost them. :hit but they were kind enough to write back and we were kinda pen pals for a while haha

Hmm... I used to write letters a lot. Maybe I should start doing this again. Who doesn’t enjoy receiving something other than junk mail?

Someone a few pages back mentioned most everyone has access to internet now, as well as has cell service. I would argue that it still depends what part of the country you live in (or maybe which country you live in). Much of CO does not have reliable cell service nor are there lines for internet. There is the option of satellite internet with speeds that make you long for dial up ;)

Board games are fun, with rum.

I generally check my personal email a few times a day. Mostly to clear out the junk before it gets out of control.

Ok. I think I caught up with this thread. Sorry I forgot to share a pic. I will try and remember later.

Oh, and I liked the comment that just because technology has a way to give us instant gratification, it doesn’t mean anything is any more urgent.

I also hate the reliance on caller ID. I do not return “missed calls” from anyone. I just return calls to people if they leave a message. It can’t h e been that important if they didn’t bother to leave a message.

I might start writing letters too!! I actually really like them. I think it’s a great idea.

And yeah some areas especially near mountains have horrible cell service haha even within our house for some reason the WiFi sucks in certain rooms and upstairs I have to use the extension/booster thingy we bought.

I am HORRIBLE about instant gratification/self control/all that. I see a notification come in, I have to check it and/or reply right away. And it’s hard putting the phone down for more than a few minutes at a time if that.

And even earlier when I was typing I kept multitasking instead of just finishing typing one thing first then going to another. Earlier it was FB and here now it’s TV and here and I also take forever to actually start/do anything. And so slow once I do lol

And even sugar/sweets I can’t resist.

I think I have a bit of an addictive personality haha

Thankfully not with drugs or alcohol or anything, would never try those, but the issues I do have probably affect my life just as much or worse.

As for calls, I don’t answer it if I don’t recognize the number. If it’s important, leave a message lol

That was me, and I said that in my area that is the case. There are plenty of other nearby places without it, and I specifically made sure to not live in those locations!
Satellite internet sucks, that's for sure.

Yeah I could never live somewhere without internet or cable or cell service lol

Also the fact that social media exists is not a reason to ignore people in real life and ignore actual human interaction. I hate that I never get a phone call from many people or see photos of nieces and nephews etc. It's expected that I know everything about everyone I care about through social media. The fact of it is, I don't. I have no clue what's going on in anyone's lives because I don't do Facebook and that makes me sad. I want to know what's going on with relatives etc. I care about them. I suppose I need to make more an effort to reach out to these people myself, but then even when I talk to them they act like I know all these things that have been on social media for months. Like I was not part of the gender reveal for my own brother's child because I don't have facebook. No one thought it was important enough to call me and tell me. *sigh* I'm done venting now. The world will never be the same again. We need a massive EMP to even make an attempt at righting these wrongs ;)

That’s just plain messed up!! As much as my family is all on the phone/social media, we all still call and text each other and everything. My one aunt is pretty bad about it and doesn’t really call anyone except their parents cause she’s always on FB but besides that no one really does that. It’s messed up.

:goodpost:
The world, at least the area of the world I am familiar with (North America) has become entirely too dependent on electricity, and its spinoff, the Internet. These are singular services with no substitute. The world is precariously balanced, and the fulcrum has become one thing.
This is the age of electricity. Mechanics have moved from physical to electrical in a big way. Our appliances, heating, water supply—all electric. If something happens to disrupt that for even a month... there'll be chaos. I intend on staying as far away from the path in case that happens.

Oh for sure, so many people would be at a loss. I'd be building a fire and boiling some water from the stream down the street, but if there was no electric world wide we'd have utter pandemonium.

I think I need to learn how to make a fire. I used to know how to but now I usually use a lighter or matches. Usually a long lighter cause I’m paranoid about burning my fingers. :lau

But I think I know how lol

Idk.

But I’m always like using tech and stuff in one way or another. But I also like LOVE camping and hiking and all that and our stove is gas so I’m at least used to the outdoors haha

Exactly. Those of us with acreage and animals can at least get by for a while if needed, but the cities will be deadly to live in.

I’ve got almost 2 1/2 acres and 11 chickens and a large garden... does that count!? Also have a cat and goldfish and some blueberry plants and wild raspberries.

But we’re also extremely close to stores and everything and technically in a neighborhood.

Is it bad that these thoughts make me smile :lau

:lau

X2

Yes...I thinks it a great idea. Don't worry you don't have to take part. I will answer for you.
:D

:lau wouldn’t that be what would Kiki do then!?

@CarpRanch
Can I convince you to remove a few of the yes votes?

View attachment 1917920 Maybe... but just a little tiny bit.

Wrong person!

It’s hilarious.

And yeah I was wondering who that was lol

This is gonna take @Texas Kiki another week to read :lau

Ahem... Back to the thread for just a moment. Chicago Manual of Style. I would have voted yes I know. And I would have been wrong! I thought it was a travel brochure for those visiting the windy city. You know...pants should be worn exactly ten inches below the natural waist line. Hair style can be variable but NEVER with a single part line just offset from head center, and whether or not to wear gang colors in a four star restaurant.
Makes more sense than a manual about how to design a proper letter.
I graduated from high school so long ago that our prioriy for writing style was to always use a sharp chisel and make sure exclamation marks didn't break the slate.

:lau this is the best!!!

:lau wait why!? :lau

I used to have a copy when I was in graduate school. I like to hoard books. I kept my copy for the longest time, but for various reasons I have had to whittle down my collection, and I don't think it made the latest cut. :)

I am a book hoarder too lol

As is my mom.

Book hoarder are the best.
:love

Aww so sweet ;)

Do other people still have bookshelves with actual books?
Several. :love
Two solely for fantasy and/or animal books. One for academics and textbooks.
:lau I tried to pay attention at the time but now forget most of it :lau

But I’m weird and keep a lot of my school work/binders and books and stuff haha
Not literally thrown out.
Pushed out of the ol’ knowledge sponge to make room for new stuff. Gotta free up space on the hard drive somehow.
That’s alright with me.. English textbooks are almost as torturous as history.

That’s an excellent idea!! I want to organize mine by category too. I’ve got tons of animal ones as well as gardening, fiction/mystery/whatever, and tons of self help books :lau none of which can help if you don’t read them lmao

And ahh okay. That makes sense. I barely remember what I did yesterday or heck, I forgot this song I wanted to share only like an hour after I heard it.

I gotta work on my memory lol

It’s weird cause some things I still remember clear as day even from a long time ago, others I forgot what I was doing or looking up.

I personally love English and history and all that sort of stuff. I love writing and reading and books and all that. :love I just don’t do it nearly often enough.

You have got to start working on writing less.
:barnie

Yeah I know :lau

Although tbh I don’t think that’s one was as long as some of my previous novels lol

I think my main problem is I just quote everyone at once and turn it into a super novel :lau

I need to reply to less quotes at once lol

Although even if I broke it up into more posts, it’d still technically be the same amount of material/words. :p

But like even here I’m getting too wordsy. :lau

I just like writing I guess lol idk. I mostly just type what I think as I’m thinking it and usually I think of way more as I go along so that my plan for one little blurb turns into novels. :lau

I really gotta work on that lol

Or transfer it to writing stories or something. :lau

Because I changed your answer for you.
:love

How sweet :love

im also a book hoarder i:love love :lovebooks

Me too!! I much prefer physical books to digital ones too.

I love writing and reading. I just think English classes are boring.. and too easy.
I love writing essays and research papers when the topic interests me.
I need to reply to less quotes at once lol
You know you don’t have to reply to every post?
