➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

They were the best 3 of the 6 cockerels and I was still hoping to rehome them. At least they had a nice if short life.

:hugs It's so hard with the cockerels. Even if the crowing is not an issue, what to do with all the little guys? I've got 4 left and have slated today for culling one more. He's starting to get into staring contests with Duke and I've already decided that he is not going to be my replacement roo. But he's a nice little guy, and it's hard. Whelp. I eat chicken. I'm going to put his meat in the "for sausage" bin, as it's easier for us to eat the extra boys when they are turned into something that doesn't remind us so strongly of what they once were.

I’m with you, why should people be punished for housing animals that make them more self-sufficient and provide such a wholesome hobby? Why are people allowed to chain a dog up outside for hours and blast patio music until 2am but they can’t handle the sweet music of a rooster crow?

Could not agree more.

New coop is almost finished

So cute!

Second from the bottom, with the solid brown chest, that's a boy. The picture with multiple quail and one in center in sandbox with tan and speckled chest, that's a girl.
I think there might be 2 or 3 with this rusty color:

The rest look like this:
Rusty/brown means boy. Speckled is girl, although I did have some boys that started out with slightly speckled upper chests.
What about the three that are white in the chest...automatic girl?

I might have 9/10 girls and 3/4 boys. Unbelievable.
White chest means you have to wait until their behavior tells you boy or girl. Either wait until they start laying eggs, or watch how the definite boys interact with them. Boys will try to mount the girls, but if they can't get at a girl then they will mount each other. So behavior sometimes doesn't help as much.

I haven't been able to separate each one yet but I think of the 10 regular color quail I am only seeing 3 max that may be boys ..the rusty color chest...maybe only 2. The other 7 all have light spotted chests.
The 3 white chest ones...I'm going to guess that one or two could be boys and all white will be a girl.

Also...you see the rusty color in his face here:

I'm wondering if that too means boy.
