They were the best 3 of the 6 cockerels and I was still hoping to rehome them. At least they had a nice if short life.
I’m with you, why should people be punished for housing animals that make them more self-sufficient and provide such a wholesome hobby? Why are people allowed to chain a dog up outside for hours and blast patio music until 2am but they can’t handle the sweet music of a rooster crow?
New coop is almost finished
Second from the bottom, with the solid brown chest, that's a boy. The picture with multiple quail and one in center in sandbox with tan and speckled chest, that's a girl.Look at all my girls.3.5 weeks. They still aren't making any noise. Zero. None.View attachment 1525946 View attachment 1525947 View attachment 1525948 View attachment 1525949 View attachment 1525950 View attachment 1525951 View attachment 1525952 View attachment 1525953 View attachment 1525954
Rusty/brown means boy. Speckled is girl, although I did have some boys that started out with slightly speckled upper chests.I think there might be 2 or 3 with this rusty color:
The rest look like this:
White chest means you have to wait until their behavior tells you boy or girl. Either wait until they start laying eggs, or watch how the definite boys interact with them. Boys will try to mount the girls, but if they can't get at a girl then they will mount each other. So behavior sometimes doesn't help as much. What about the three that are white in the chest...automatic girl?
I might have 9/10 girls and 3/4 boys. Unbelievable.
I haven't been able to separate each one yet but I think of the 10 regular color quail I am only seeing 3 max that may be boys ..the rusty color chest...maybe only 2. The other 7 all have light spotted chests.Second from the bottom, with the solid brown chest, that's a boy. Often the red on the face is a boy trait as well.Also...you see the rusty color in his face here:View attachment 1526678I'm wondering if that too means boy.

I think I need to build a walk in quail cage so I can put my current quail cage inside it and use it as a brooder.
