➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Alrighty ya’ll. We have the option of adding a gosling to our flock. I’ve read many different things saying that if you have one goose it’ll protect your flock.

However, I just want to know if anyone has had geese before and hand-raised them, did it turn out well? We know that they are loud, which at this point would be best for us since the hawk doesn’t look like it’s planning on leaving anytime soon..and if we do move then we also have a flock protector already available.

Why You Shouldn't Keep Just One Goose

I personally do not believe in imprinting animals or birds because it removes their ability to understand there is a difference between them and what they were imprinted by. I did not imprint the geese that I raised and never had any problems with them. None of my geese were ever friendly nor would they "attack" any people. They were the best warning system I had. They only alarmed for a legitimate reason and they did it at any time of the day or night.

Thank you for that very insightful thread! Definitely much more helpful information than what I was reading.

We imprinted the ducks, but they also learned that they are ducks once we kicked them out into their own “coop” then integrated them in with the chickens. We’d probably do the same with goslings though the “kick out” would happen faster as they grow so quickly.
