➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

You decided to order from Meyer’s!? YAY! :D and I vote yes! I vaccinated my original flock and also chose to vaccinate this current one. To me it is worth the extra expense and extra insurance. Plus I am paranoid lol but we have a lot of wild birds around too.

Curious why you say not? Any particular reason?

I think you are overthinking it :p I had all mine vaccinated and they have never been sick or anything and are all perfectly healthy, happy, and lay well. Don’t seem to be immune compromised or anything. Plus I just thought of this, that since my current ones are vaccinated and birds can carry it and not show symptoms, if I didn’t vaccinate the new ones and then they developed it cause my flock had it and I didn’t know it, I would feel awful about it. But on the same token, since none of yours are vaccinated, if you got the new ones vaccinated, they could maybe carry it and get your other flock sick?

Lol
Once you start vaccinating you almost have to vaccinate all future birds so Dog is doing a good thing.
But I think if you have never vaccinated it is best to not start.

The Marek's shot doesn't prevent them from getting the disease and constantly passing it on to everyone.
Just say no.

Huh, that’s true. They could pass it to your unvaccinated flock.

Ah shit lol but my current flock is vaccinated and could spread it to and kill the new babies so I am glad I chose to get them vaccinated. But I think next flock I will not vaccinate. But I don’t think I would ever mix unvaccinated and vaccinated birds. Sounds like that’s a bad idea.

What about any of the other stuff that they try to offer? Like that grogel or vital packs? Can I just bring a dish with some hydro-hen water or nutridrench stuff? Or are those nice to have right at the onset?

I got all of that stuff with my first chick order but honestly I never used any of it and it is still sitting in a cabinet somewhere or I probably threw it out by now so for me it was a waste of money so I say don’t do it! They don’t need it! I did not get it with this current order. And if you really want to give them something, you can use a tiny bit of NutriDrench or Tractor Supply also sells chick starter electrolyte pack things. I forget the exact name but they are like $1 for 3 and do the same thing for cheaper.

I vote no to all add ons.
I vote yes to you giving them a drop of Nutri-Drench when they arrive though.

Good idea.

KDog isn't going to like my posts. :lau

Nah it’s okay, it is very interesting!! Although that article did say that unvaccinated birds will die if the vaccinated flock has it and spreads it, right? And my current flock is vaccinated so I am glad I got it for the babies but I don’t think I’d get it for future birds. Need to read the rest of the article.

Correct....I think you did good by getting it.

Thanks! That’s good to know. I would feel awful if my new babies died because of me. Especially since current ones are around wild birds. I know it says to try to keep them away from wild birds but that’s impossible living in the woods and free ranging sometimes lol so my current ones probably are carrying it

I ordered my new babies! EEEEEEEEE! :celebrate I'm excited and terrified all at the same time. This is the first time that I've ordered online/thru the mail. I guess I need to pay a trip to my local post office and talk to them about what to do. I've got time tho. They should be here in between March 12-14. And then they'll be in the house for 6 weeks or so, so it should be plenty warm for them outside at night. If I need to adjust the timing then I can. No big deal. I am amazed at how fast some chickens sell out. I never would have thought that. I guess it just depends on the breed and it's popularity I guess.
