➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

So here is my chicken story of the week:
I go jump in my truck a couple of days ago to go to work. Of course there is a hen grazing in the front yard, no big deal, they know to stay in my yard. I start the truck up, do my usual seat belt fix my purse, and briefcase so it doesn't fly all over the truck while I drive like a crazy woman, etc. Now the truck is warmed up and I start to drive away. The hen is standing on the side walk watching. Now I am wondering what she is up to. As I drive by and look into the rear view mirror, I see the hen dart across the street and head right to my neighbor's garden. After all my bragging about my well trained hens, I had to stop in the middle of the street and run her back home.
Now I am wondering if they do this on a regular basis when they hear the truck leave the house!!! :th:th

That's too funny! :gig

Once they've found a garden, good luck keeping them out of it.

Father’s day flowers. Beautiful!

Yes, ma'am!

I've been watching the other trees get eaten by the dogs. They will chew them off at the ground. Must taste good. So I put 4' tall fences. Now they jump up and pull the leaves over the sides. I'd given up on fruit this year, then I find this bunch!

The freezes we had this year also dampened my enthusiasm. Should I be surprised that the tree beside the compost pile has done the best? It is in the chicken yard with a 4' fence around it to keep the chickens from scratching it out of existence. They only eat the leaves that fall over. They don't play tug of war with the whole stalk.

The other benefit is that the compost pile is producing heat and is making a micro climate beside the banana tree.

This one is now 6 months old and wasn't hot during the freezes. Opened it up last month and the chickens are supplementing their feed with it only have 6" left from a 4' start. I'll sift it and add to the garden. Big chunks go to the new piles. Or under the quail coop as absorbents. The offal was about mid way in from last fall's CX butchering. Worked well and no stench. Was hot last October and November. Only found a few feathers.

Large animal bones didn't fall apart. I think I'll just bury them out of the way. Cow, pig, deer and bigger chicken bones. Chicken bones are easy to crush and the girls gobble those. Short pieces only.

Always read to not add meat/offal/bones to a compost pile because it would draw critters. Guess your run and your chickens keep that from happening.
Nice bananas!

I've read both ways. Add in moderation and such. So there are proponents of both.
I made sure there were a lot of absorbents, mostly wood chips. Keep in mind we have fire ants as our major predator here in suburbia. They were present. The compost is in with the chickens to keep Crazy Lady's dogs out of it. ;)

I'm glad it didn't smell.

First bunch of bananas in the yard. This experiment is a success. Funny to me story. We went and bought a banana, just to see if it would grow. Several people around have bananas planted and I never see fruit. Did my research and planted, fertilized and watered to make sure they got started. Then went to the county dump and someone dumped a bunch of banana corms. I grabbed those and planted them. So these are free, county dump bananas. The dogs are eating the store bought one. Just very interesting stuff.

You will never see me at a hockey game. The only things more boring to me are bowling, golf and tennis.
Aw c'mon. There's always excitement! Like the first game I ever went to. Leafs vs Bruins. End of 2nd buzzer went off. Player took a pot shot which hit the goalpost. Puck came up over the glass and travelled down straight to my pelvic bone. See? Always exciting!
