➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

Okay didn’t wanna take the quail thread off topic sooo.... to catch everyone up... :lau

Kiki said heats overrated and then Turk said she prefers that to the foot of snow we get up here and then I said I much prefer the snow :lau then added remind me I said that when it’s the middle of February with snow everywhere and it’s below freezing :lau  so then Kiki screenshotted it :lau and they both said they would lmaooo I then thanked them :lau

So now that we’re all caught up, want to add this to the discussion haha found some old pics on FB. Soooo.

Btw, @mixedUPturk it was way more than a foot of snow a few years ago. :lau And I think we had a bad one a couple years before that but after this we really haven’t had a bad storm or winter in years lol (furiously knocks on wood :lau  ) few storms here and there but it melts and pretty mild temps. This was snowmageddon :lau also a couple years ago (December 2017 ish) in western PA they got like 5 feet of snow in just a few days around Christmas. but I think they took the record back or else lowered it cause they said the kid must have measured wrong. :lau my aunt was pissed :lau everyone knows it really was that much lol but the kid was new.

And apparently last year they broke all sorts of records too.

I’m glad I don’t live by the lakes lol lake effect snow is insaaaaaaaneeeeeeeee.

I am actually hoping we finally get a snowmageddon again. :lau :fl I miss our SNOW!!! Hate having bare ground in the middle of winter!! It used to not completely melt till spring. I think this year is the year we finally have a winter again though. Looking forward to it. Again, remind me of this mid winter. :lau

Popping in while catching up...just on page 4507.
Was at the vet's with 6 replacement heifers getting their first weigh in, shots and vaccinations and new ear tags. Anyway we were in the livestock exam/work room and I noticed hundreds of dead flies on every surface and on the floor!
I asked.
Seems a farmer brought in a trailer load of cows to work yesterday that were covered with flies. After he left, many of the flies remained, trapped in the area.
Doc used Agita 10 WG by Elanco...a new product for them. It is a water solvable granule fly bait that is used as a spray in chicken and hog barns. Said he was told that it can be sprayed on chicken litter and allowed to dry before adding the chicks.
He said he mixed it up in a pressure garden sprayer and just sprayed the top half of all the walls and the ceiling.
Flies eat it and die....quickly. It washes off with water so can only be used inside. He suggested staying it on one wall to draw the flies.
Gonna look into this for our livestock barn and my brooder room. :caf
My hot tub room is loaded with flies right now...hatched out of an empty brooder box I failed to remove.:he
Don't want to spray insecticide in there.

I was thinking I did a brain too but wasn't sure. And I may have my eye and heart sources wrong. It's been a few years for me.
Had my art students examine cow eyes. They are closest to human eye in structure. Got them from a local butcher shop.

I don't know. I worked for a couple vets and the one I did this with said very plainly that it was the worst part of the job. He hated doing it. It takes some serious effort.
Our vet had to remove a head from a raccoon that bit a boy for testing for rabies. The boy was taking the coon out of a trap. Not the most pleasant job....taking every precaution in safety for him and the office. Luckily for the boy...no rabies.

Yup. Alive and kicking.
It helps because black soldier fly larva is a lot less “shiny” and wet than other maggots, if you know what I mean. They also don’t bite or smell.

Bleh. I hate roaches too. Are they dubias?
We give her dubia roaches when we can, but they’re hard to find and expensive. They’re actually kind of nice though, they’re fat and slow. More like giant roly polys than roaches.
Yes dubias. :sick They are really expensive locally so we order them online from Dubi Deli. They are super hardy and easy to keep alive so we just buy a bunch at a time and then keep them in a little plastic tank with feeder food, hydration crystals, and some upright pieces of egg carton. Tad loves them and they are a way better than crickets. Hated keeping crickets. Less ick factor but loud and messy. And they bite. With roaches it is just the creepy rustling noises they make that grosses me out for some reason. The things we do for our lizards, right?

Where do you get your fly larvae?
Friend in OK raises dubais for her chickens in a converted freezer in her barn.

I had bought a bag of feed for my chickens this past Saturday. This particular store is the only one that I know of that sells my Purina Flock Raiser Pellets. We switched to the pellets because it seemed like it was less wasteful than the crumbles, especially for my ducks since the older ones were eating it as well. It's mill date was older than I prefer but my chickens were literally out of food so... I took the chance. I got home and opened it. It wasn't molded but it WAS infested with little crawly black bugs. :sick The feed store closes at noon on Saturdays and isn't open on Sundays so I had to wait until today to take care of it. I ended up going to TSC Saturday and got the chickens some Flock Raiser Crumbles. I really wish the pellets were more widely available. I mean, you can get a variety of LAYER feed in pellet form. I like the Flock Raiser because I have males in the flock and I can just offer oyster shell on the side and not worry about my boys eating too much calcium. Idk. Maybe I overthink about it but it's just the way I am doing things. I think we may switch the ducks completely over to the duck feed though. At least that is what I would like to do. That way the chickens can just have the Flock Raiser and then I can just do the crumbles and not worry about the pellets at all.

This last week we have also been meeting with Recruiters. My son wants to join the military. He already took the practice ASVAB but he will meet up there again Monday to sign a request form to take the official ASVAB and do a Medical check. Then we will go from there after he finds out what he scores on it and what field/jobs are available. He is looking at a particular field so we will see. It is going to be so difficult to let my baby go. I'm being strong now but man, if I think too hard about it... :hit Then we are going to be empty nesters. Sad thing is, all of the animals keep me bound to home so I/we STILL can't go off and enjoy myself/ourselves. :barnie
Hate having to mess with a bad bag of feed.
We have a brand available that is All Flock that comes in 15, 18 and 22% protein in 50 pound bags. Comes in both crumbles or pellets and can be fed to all breeds. I can get a medicated crumble for the chicks too.
Ducks are thriving and so are the chickens.
