➡I accidentally bought Balut eggs: 2 live ducks! Now a Chat Thread!

It snowed beginning at 3 am and has been coming down off and on thru the day....we are now at 4 inches and it is coming down again.
Daisy the duck is very vocal in her discontent that I chose not to free range the birds today. And the dogs are mixed in their response...on a potty trip this morning...Lily was distracted by the snow wanting to play in it, but Ruby was focused on her duty!
Get out there, choose the right spot

That stuff is supposed to be here this evening & through the night! I don't want it though! I didn't ask for it either, but nobody asks me!

You know you want the birds outta the house when you're working on covering a pen with it in the 30°'s...🥶

I also laid the ceramic heat thingamajig on the porch and nearly caught it on fire, it started to smoke and now we have a "cool" burnt spot......

 Oh well...

Just refilled all the bird feeders outside and also refilled all the chickens’ water earlier. They were both out somehow  :th they drink tons lately. Anyway, don’t think they were out for long cause it wasn’t empty before but refilled both. Food is fine. Got the eggs too. Got super busy yesterday and forgot. There were 8 in there. Getting between 4-6 a day usually now. The cat is still loving all her new toys. :love and I got to hang with a super cool dog earlier haha I get to hang with her every week but still. 😂

I had a waterer that they were going through too quick.. turns out a nipple was leaking

That's what happened to my last nipple water bucket and I had to make a new one. The bucket cracked because I had the nipples too tight.

These ones though are open waterers. Big heated dog bowl for the big girls and just a regular ceramic type bowl for the chicks. I need to get a different one for them but it was a fast replacement as their other waterer started leaking. It was just the cheap TSC plastic type.

I think they all just drink tons of water but

The big girls I swear go through like a gallon, gallon and a half, a day :th

You guys should get the water cups, I like them better and so don't my chickens

I may have to try those!! I think they girls would like it better too. They hate getting only like one drop out of the nipples but I hate them dirtying the open waterer instantly so this seems like a good compromise! And I usually switch to the heated bowl in winter anyway so freezing wouldn’t be an issue. May need to switch over. Can you put them in a bucket or do you have to have something special? Where did you get yours?

I feed fermented feed and this time of year I put out 3 two gallon waterers and they last almost a week. Longer if snow on the ground. They get moisture from the feed.... 4dz + chickens and 2 dz turkeys. I bring them in if it's going below 25... The nipples don't freeze until then, if they are in the coops

You can put them right on a bucket, but with a bucket deicer the nipples won’t freeze. Any water in the cups will still freeze.

Thanks! That’s good to know!!

And yeah, that makes a lot of sense, although I usually switch to a heated dog bowl for winter anyway so it wouldn’t be too much of an issue.

I have thought about buying a deicer for the bucket so I could use the nipples year round but I was paranoid it would melt or start a fire or something. :lau

Plus I have a perfectly fine heated bowl so don’t really wanna buy something else right now haha

Although I do need to come up with something different for the chicks. Maybe buy another heated bowl for them.

But it’s almost spring now anyway so won’t need it pretty soon.
